“Black Panther” In Theaters Feb. 18
One of the stars from the hotly-anticipated “Black Panther” movie said she’s thrilled and humbled by the public’s response to the first Marvel film with a black lead character.
But the German actress said part of what makes “Black Panther” so special was its universal appeal.
“This movie is for everybody,” Kuzumba said. “It’s not just for young ones or for Marvel fans. You can go and watch a wonderful story and see beautiful characters. You can laugh, you can cry – everything is going to be in this movie.”
“Black Panther,” which tells the story of warrior king T’Challa (Chadwick Bozeman) and the fictional country of Wakanda, is on track to be one of the most popular films in the Marvel Comic franchise after its pre-sales sold out in less than a day. And Kuzumba said she couldn’t be more excited.
“I’m very proud that I was allowed to be part of it,” she said. “Everybody did their best. When you know people want to watch your movie, you think ‘Wow! All this hard work paid off!”
And speaking of work, Kuzumba, who plays Royal bodyguard “Ayo,” said that included lots of cardio and learning to handle heavy duty weapons.
“We needed to look like people who were highly trained,” Kuzumba said. “Even when we were filming, we still were training. You had to be ready to run around for 10 hours, run, jump and be very focused.”
Kuzumba was in Harlem Friday for an appearance at the Schomburg Center For Research In Black Culture’s annual Comic Book Festival, where she premiered a clip from “Black Panther” and participated in a Q&A with fans.
