LA Considers Getting Another Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood sign is known around the world as an iconic landmark that tourists absolutely eat up on their California visits. The downside to this is that the city’s actual residents aren’t so fond of the landmark when these visitors cause major traffic problems just to get their selfie in. Huge landmarks and photo ops are going to cause a ruckus in any major city, but Los Angeles is looking for a way to limit the trouble caused to its residents.

City Councilman David Ryu came forward with an interesting idea: to put a replica sign on the other side of the hills. “The backdrop behind the sign would still look similar to the original if it is located on the mountain…This would give the City the opportunity to promote the replica sign viewpoints as more accessible locations for photos than in the residential neighborhoods south of the Park.”  This move would reported cost somewhere around $120,000, but it’s tough to say what the repercussions would be for this new tourist destination.

The report states, “One downside of this strategy is that it would take away from the history of the original Hollywood Sign and Hollywoodland. For educational and historical purposes, it may make the most sense to maintain only the original sign. An additional sign is proposed as a strategy to consider because of its potential to improve safety and reduce neighborhood congestion.”

While people near the Hollywood sign definitely feel the effects of tourists commuting to take their Hollywood sign pictures, it looks like most people are against the idea of a replica sign because there’s nothing like the real thing. Ain’t that the truth!
