Authorities have arrested a New Jersey high school teacher after he demanded nude photos from two male students in order for him to improve their grades.
Jose Maria, a 39-year-old former Passaic High School Spanish teacher, asked two of his students to send him a picture of their genitalia in exchange for a better grade in his class. He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct, according to reports from The Record.
His arrest comes following a family member of one of the students finding the text messages between the teen and his teacher. The student is now an adult and attended Passaic from 2010 to 2012. One of the students, who sent a photo to Maria, told authorities that their teacher would take him and another student to buy Chinese food and alcohol.
After the mother on one former student approached Maria, he begged her not to go to the police, saying he would commit suicide. He later admitted to police that he asked the students for pictures. It only took authorities a day and a half to complete their investigation. He has since been released from jail and is prohibited from having contact with minors.
Maria has been suspended from his position with pay, his salary is $75,513, according to The Record.
