Hollywood Diversity Initiative To Launch This Summer

Ava DuVernay as well as Netflix, HBO and Dan Lin are teaming up with Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti to ensure there is more diversity in Hollyweird by offering grants and jobs to women and people of color according to Deadline.

Reportedly, the $5 million dollar program will assist 150 Hollyweird interns this summer of all backgrounds and into 2020. The money will not use tax dollars but will be financed through fundraising.

Ava says  of the program, “real change happens when we take tangible action, and that means giving young women and people of color opportunities in the industry early on so they have the chance to shape its future.”

“What is one thing that people can do to instigate inclusion on film set? Hire a woman,” Oscar nominee DuVernay also made a point of noting. “Films directed by women have 76% percent more inclusion across people of color and women.”

This is huge if all of those interns of minority do move on to become major players in Hollyweird, it could reshaped the industry. They expect the program to expand to 500 placements by 2020.
