The Comedian Gears Up For A Much Needed Cause

Amid reports of the horrible living conditions for NYC public housing residents, one New York comedian is planning to do something about it.

According to New York Daily News, Michael Che announced a special comedy show on January 11 that will benefit public housing in New York City. All the proceeds will go to The Fund for Public Housing, a 501c3 nonprofit that’s affiliated with the New York City Housing Authority. It was founded in 2015 to improve public housing in New York and the people who live there.

Che will be joined by Michelle Wolf and other entertainers for the special show at Manhattan’s Irving Plaza called “A Night for NYCHA with Michael Che and Friends.”

“A lot of residents don’t have heat this winter,” Che wrote in an Instagram story post. “Some insane stat, like 80% had outages, and this money could really help. I grew up in a building like that, and it’s really tough.”

Che grew up in public housing in the Lower East Side as the youngest of seven children. Now, at 35 years old, the comedian has gotten involved with various charitable causes through his comedy, including events last year that benefited Planned Parenthood and Distribute Dignity.

Jeff Ross, another fellow comic, will host the January 11 event, while Che and Wolf are set to deliver their signature stand-up. Additional performers haven’t been announced yet, but Che has been known to bring out surprise guests at his events.

Tickets for the show go on sale at 1 p.m. Friday on the Live Nation website, with standing room passes costing $65 and VIP seating costing $150.

Meanwhile, New York and federal officials reached an agreement in June to fix the many issues plaguing NYCHA, including heating, and the revelation of toxic mold and lead paint in buildings.

Officials have yet to come up with a plan to fix these issues by last Friday’s deadline. They asked for a 45 day extension to come to an agreement.
