Unaccompanied Migrant Teen Dies In U.S. Custody

A 16-year-old unaccompanied Guatemalan boy has reportedly died after being taken to a government shelter in Texas, Health and Human Services stated Wednesday, during talks with several publications. He is the third migrant child to die while in U.S. custody, NYDailyNews reports.

According to the site:

“Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry told the Associated Press that the teen had crossed the border near El Paso on April 19 and was brought to a Brownsville shelter the next day. Though he seemed fine then, he was taken to a hospital the day after that with fever, chills and a headache, U.S. Health and Human Services officials told NBC News. He was treated and released back to the shelter.”

But his condition only grew worse from there….

“The minor’s health did not improve after being transferred back to the shelter so on the morning of April 22, 2019, the minor was taken to another hospital emergency department via ambulance,” HHS spokeswoman Evelyn Stauffer told BuzzFeed News, the first outlet to report the death. “Later that day, the minor was transferred to a children’s hospital in Texas and was treated for several days in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Following several days of intensive care, the minor passed away at the hospital on April 30, 2019.”

Reports state the 16-year-old had a severe brain infection. May he rest in peace.
