BBC Radio Host Fired Over Racist Royal Baby Chimpanzee Tweet
It was just a matter of time before someone made a poor racist joke about Prince Harry and Dutchess Meghan Markle‘s new royal baby. BBC radio broadcaster Danny Baker was fired this week after posting a racist tweet about Sussex newborn Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. On Wednesday, the BBC Radio host tweeted a black and white photo of a man and woman holding hands with a chimpanzee in a suit and a top hat, with the caption, “Royal baby leaves hospital.”
After the backlash ensued, Baker deleted the tweet, claiming that it was a “stupid gag”. He added:
“[It was] supposed to be a joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte. [I made] an enormous mistake.”
BBC released a statement after the incident saying Baker’s tweet “goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny’s a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us.” Baker slammed the company for letting him go in series of tweets:
If you’re going to be racist, be prepared to deal with the backlash. Periodt.
