Harlem Restaurants Serve Up Their Best Dishes During Two Day Fete

People got a taste of Harlem, NYC over the weekend at an annual festival that celebrates the neighborhood’s vibrant food culture.

Thousands of people attended the fifth annual Harlem EatUp! Festival in Morningside Park May 18 and 19, where they enjoyed tasty bites and cocktails from uptown establishments.

The Harlem EatUp! Festival showcases the best in uptown cuisine with a heavy dose of arts, music and culture. The event, co-founded by Harlem restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson and partner Herb Karlitz, showcases the diverse offerings from the Manhattan neighborhood.

Proceeds from the festival will go towards local nonprofits.

The two-day festival brought out celebrity chefs like JJ Johnson and Travel Channel host Andrew Zimmern, who demonstrated how to cook their go-to meals at the EatUp! Main Stage.

Samuelsson’s “Red Rooster” restaurant served jerk beef short rib tacos, while chef Charles Gabriel of central Harlem’s “Charles’ Country Pan Fried Chicken” served plates piled high with soul food favorites.

Blvd Bistro served jumbo shrimp and grits with pulled pork barbecue sliders and there was plenty of sweet potato waffles at Melba’s station for attendees including Dapper Dan, Neil Patrick Harris and socialite Sidra Smith.

The weekend tasting capped a week of dinners and special performances around town in the festival’s honor.

About mid-way through the tasting, the attendees started an impromptu 90s dance party in the food and drinks tent.
