A “Lil Positivity”: Oprah, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Penny Hardway Have All Together Donated $5 Million to Different Charities

- By Bossip Staff

Oprah, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Penny Hardway have all made the “The Giving Back 30” list. This list features the top 30 celebrities who have made the largest donations to charity. Oprah is listed in the top ten, while Will, Jada, and Penny are all in the top 20. For the past two years Oprah has been named the most generous celebrity but this year the spot was taken by Paul Newman.

The Giving Back Fund’s third annual Giving Back 30, a list of celebrities who have made the largest donations to charity according to public records, was released in the November 1st issue of PARADE Magazine.

Readers may have been surprised to learn that Paul Newman replaced Oprah Winfrey as the most generous celebrity of 2008. Oprah had occupied the number one spot by a wide margin for the first two years of the list. Before his death, Newman made a donation of nearly $21 million to his self-named Newman’s Own Foundation. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were second with a $13.5 million donation to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which distributed $6.4 million to charity, including a $2 million grant to The Global Health Committee for an Ethiopian clinic project, a $1 million grant to the Make it Right Foundation founded by Pitt, and $500,000 to the Armed Services YMCA USA.

“Our hope is that celebrities will begin to become more comfortable sharing information about their charitable giving — perhaps not disclosing everything they give, but sharing enough to enable them to serve as role-models to their peers and fans,” said Marc Pollick, President and Founder of The Giving Back Fund.

It’s always nice to see celebrities giving back and helping those less unfortunate. This year we had four names on the list, lets see who will step up to the plate so we can keeping adding more of us each and every year.

    Wham to MICHAEL JACKSON????

Anyway Michaels nepher Taj twittered this 2 days ago:

One of the most important lessons I learned from my uncle Michael… “True” Charity

He taught us(my brothers & I) at a young age that it’s not “True” charity if you announce it to everyone saying “hey look what I did”.

“True” charity is when you do something for someone or give money or time to something and nobody else knows you did it.

That was one of the 1st things our uncle reminded us about when we started having success with 3T. Be charitable and give back.

Use your success and fame for good. Visit children hospitals. Give yourself to the less fortunate. Make your music count for something.

My uncle was truly amazing. Not only did he do all of these things and more. We learned best by his example.

There will NEVER be a purer soul than my uncle Michael. People put him through hell here on earth, but now he is finally free in heaven.

    I miss him so much.

  • I am sorry for beating Rhianna I am sorry sorry sorry sorry, now where is my mic, and watch me dance!

Jackson was a world record charity breaker, that isnt something the white man likes to talk about!

Flipsakes, his Will was about his charities, aswell as his children and mother, what a balanced pure hearted man he was!

Miss you Michael, play your music everyday though, so to me you have never died. Like you said; When you bury me underneath all your pain, I am steady laughing whilst surfacing!

You will always be singing, dancing, laughing and remembered!

Wasn’t that the intent for Liberia?
    @ Nik
I totally agree. It’s cool to donate but you don’t have to prove that you’re the biggest and baddest donator. God knows your heart.

I am pretty sure they went thru public records. I know some celebs do not like to say what they give like Prince and Dr.Bill Cosby. Side note Dr.Cosby and Mrs.Cosby gave the largest lump sum of money to any HBCU in History. And congrats to Penny Hardway (keep playing golf young man)

    Kudos to those who gave

@ people on here talking about Michael Jackson
It really boggles my mind when people say how great he was about giving back to the community. Well I guess his nephew was right about him giving in secret because his hometown of Gary, Indiana (also my hometown) is a $hit hole…I guess the hometown just fends for itself.

    @devil’s advocate,
You are an idiot!!! I tried being diplomatic in this blog but ignorance just gets to me. There are 53 countries in Africa and some very well developed. have clean water and have millions of tourists who do not fear for their lives, in fact come back year after year. No, but you have to give into the stereotypical reports your media tells you. and like a fool you believe them, instead of visiting a country to see that it actually is 1000 times different than what they told you. Africa doesn’t need you and your condescending energy, stay in the States. we are trying to emancipate Africa from Aid and the stronghold of the west cause that’s what keeps my people down and you come with this nonsense of a comment? Stuff you!!!

How arrogant…A country that you Americans can visit? Colonisation is the reason Africa is what it is today and you glorify that foolishness?
    sies man!!!

  • http://www.soapdish.socialgo.com Saytoodles

Truth of the matter is that no amount of money you pump into Africa will fix anything. Only Africans can fix Africa. the 1 trillion dollars that you gave Africa in the last 30 years has just put the continent into deeper poverty. Now leave it to us to fix things.

Also…it’s not like you walk around feeling safe in your own country, we get the reports here too, so get off your horse and taste reality smothered in hard facts.

    @ Please
Please shut up. Most of the politicians who were influential in Gary moved away when we got our first black mayor back in the 70’s. U heard of white flight right. Plus let’s not be so easy and quick to forget that Gary’s a majority black and urban city and Micheal Jackson did all he could to tear his face up to and unrecognizable white person.
On the other hand, maybe they threaten him and told him he could help Gary or they’d kill his family…yeah, that sounds believable.

  • Mock Rock Star

I messed up that last thing I was saying because it was such a ridiculous thought. Point blank he didn’t see the need to help his hometown to me being a member of his hometown has the right to feel “some kind of way” when his “undying contributions” are so often put on blast. I’ll put it also to U like this:
Live in a city that was considered the Murder capital for years and then a ghost town after that and then you can address me.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    @ saytoodles,

yeah right, this is the very same homo negro who advertised he was sending all those black kids to Disneyworld (instead of building them their own bigger better pool)when the whites wouldnt let them swim in that club pool. You think this muthaf*cka wouldnt announce donations? get real……
