VA Gov Declares It “Confederate History Month” Because Tourists Love Racism

- By Bossip Staff

When the GOP talks about how they want to “take back America” exactly how far back are they thinking? Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell has revived the controversial “Confederate History Month.” Civil rights leaders plan to take off their shoes and beat his a$s down. Details under the hood.

Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, reviving a controversy that had been dormant for eight years, has declared that April will be Confederate History Month in Virginia, a move that angered civil rights leaders Tuesday but that political observers said would strengthen his position with his conservative base.

McDonnell said Tuesday that the move was designed to promote tourism in the state, which next year will mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war. McDonnell said he did not include a reference to slavery because “there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states. Obviously, it involved slavery. It involved other issues. But I focused on the ones I thought were most significant for Virginia.”

The proclamation was condemned by the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus and the NAACP. Former governor L. Douglas Wilder called it “mind-boggling to say the least” that McDonnell did not reference slavery or Virginia’s struggle with civil rights in his proclamation. Though a Democrat, Wilder has been supportive of McDonnell and boosted his election efforts when he declined to endorse the Republican’s opponent, R. Creigh Deeds.

“Confederate history is full of many things that unfortunately are not put forth in a proclamation of this kind nor are they things that anyone wants to celebrate,” he said. “It’s one thing to sound a cause of rallying a base. But it’s quite another to distort history.”

The seven-paragraph declaration calls for Virginians to “understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War.”

McDonnell had quietly made the proclamation Friday by placing it on his Web site, but it did not attract attention in the state capital until Tuesday.

The Virginia NAACP and the state’s Legislative Black Caucus called the proclamation an insult to a large segment of the state’s population, particularly because it never acknowledges slavery.

“Governor McDonnell’s proclamation was offensive and offered a disturbing revision of the Civil War and the brutal era that followed,” said Del. Kenneth Cooper Alexander (D-Norfolk), chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus. “Virginia has worked hard to move beyond the very things for which Governor McDonnell seems nostalgic.”

Do you think Germany has a Nazi History Month? Hell to the no because they know that mess is out of order and the Jews will stomp that mess out.
Just goes to show you how little respect Virginia’s governor has for his Black constituents. What is Black VA going to do about this one?

Tourism is down – probably because of the amount of tickets you get while driving in Virginia. Not to mention, having to be forced to come all the way back to VIRGINIA to go to court for a speeding ticket. And 9/10 having to hire a lawyer, too. It’s crazy – you get a speeding ticket and all of a sudden I’m bombarded by letters from lawyers in VIRGINIA. Which I had to hire one to save me from having to drive all the way back there – in lieu of just sending them a freaking check in the mail for the ticket. So FREAK VIRGINIA is what I say. I wouldn’t recommend my dog visit that state.

Not to harp on the negative but for all of you who frequent this site and say it’s 2010 race doesn’t matter anymore remember incidents like this because racism still rears it’s ugly head quite often and has not and will not be going anywhere in the near future. Something of this nature is happening somewhere in the country on a daily basis and we as black people tend to be overly accepting of other people who do not always recipricate these feelings towards us. And some of us who have “made it” seem to forget that there are a countless number of brothers and sisters who continue to live in squalor and are swept under the rug don’t let sucess go to your heads, we as a people must come together and see the beauty in one another and work collectively to imporve our overall lot within this country.

Perfect photo. The Lawn Jockey showing off his Master. What’s ironic is that the lawn jockey think that suit is fooling anyone who knows that particular Master prefers him in breeches and a silk shirt.

  • God's Angel

Wow. I know the black Republicans try to defend the racist things that happen in their party, but I wonder how they feel about this?

If this isn’t nipped in the bud, you will start seeing the Southern states hang their confederate flags more proudly. Overt racism will become cool again, instead of hidden.

Do we really want to go backwards?

  • memchee

man – the repubes just keeping finding ways to subtly stoke and stroke the racists!

  • Jamal

Hey Diamond,if this proclamation causes more violence, then the real racist nut jobs will be those committing the violence, not anybody honoring their Confederate History. Think about, who is the loser in that scenario. Also, what is it with all of you who use mispellings justso you can “cuss” in your comments? How childish is that?

  • Charles

Wow, reading the comments here so far, I am begining to wonder if you are not the one with the racist tendencies. Comments like cracker, devil, hayseed. I think that people who claim to want cultural diversity truly don’t want that at all.

  • Malachi

Hmmmm, can you say “move” if you don’t like Virginia. The governor should be applauded for represnting ALL of his constituents, instead of bowing to politically correct, intolerant bigots who don’t want to allow others the right to honor their history and heritage.

  • kickdoshawty

lol hes an idiot, dont make me represent my name on dat azz

  • Ed

I think it is a great thing. Virginia was and is a great state and should be able to express our history and promote tourism. I cannot think of one person that I know that lived a 150 years ago that it had affected but you can find thousand that wants to keep thing stirred up in a negative way.
