This story sounds crazy:
A protest was planned for Monday afternoon following a controversial police-involved shooting prompted by a 9-1-1 call from the man who was ultimately gunned down. Police confronted a knife-wielding Emmanuel Paulino Sunday morning at 121-123 Vermilyea Ave. in the Inwood section of Manhattan shortly after he made the call.
This is a transcript of that call:
Operator: 911 Operator, where is your emergency?
Suspect: Yeah, I want you to call the cops cause I’m ready to kill.
Suspect: I’m ready to kill some cops right now.
Operator: You’re ready to kill some cops?
Police said the four responding officers saw Paulino with a knife, identified themselves and told him to drop it. When he didn’t, one of the officers used his Taser, but Paulino pulled the electrical prongs from his body and continued to charge at the police officers, police said. The officers fired, hitting Paulino several times. Paulino, 24, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Some neighbors and relatives said police overreacted. Activists were also upset the NYPD released audio from the 9-1-1 call before a full investigation had been conducted. Fernando Mateo, the president of Hispanics Across America, held a vigil Sunday night in front of Paulino’s home.
“We believe that with all the technology and all the training the finest police department in the world has, it could have been prevented, it could have been handled differently,” Mateo said. In 2008, an emotionally disturbed Brooklyn man plummeted headfirst to his death from a building ledge when police stunned him with a Taser. The police commander who ordered an officer to fire the stun gun later committed suicide after apologizing to the victim’s family.
After the man’s death, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly ordered refresher training for the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit on how to deal with the mentally ill.
SMH. Yeah they certainly need to handle these situations in a more ‘professional’ manner. Although Emmanuel was calling up 911 saying he was “ready to kill some cops” (SMH), there’s no way he was going to be able to do so with that lil black knife he was holding. If they ‘felt the need’ to shoot him with a real gun, they could’ve just shot him in the arm or leg or something and taken him into custody. Craziness. R.I.P.
