Black Men Stay In The Trap ‘Cause It’s Easier Than Picking Up A Book? He Thinks So

- By Bossip Staff

A Republican candidate has finally said something so racist that even the GOP and the Tea Party don’t have his back.

Republican Party leaders in central Illinois are calling on their own candidate for state senate to step down following racist remarks he made at a candidate’s forum last week.

Al Reynolds, who is considered the Tea Party candidate in Illinois’ 52nd District, has been out of the spotlight since saying that African American men preferred dealing drugs to going to college, because it is “easier.”

“I’ve been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are motivated more so than the minority men,” Reynolds said, when asked what he would do to increase diversity at state colleges. “And it’s a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than do education. It’s easier.”

The room was silent as Reynolds made his remarks. (Video below) He continued:

“We need to provide ways that are more incentive, other than just sports avenues, for the men for the minorities to want to go to college and get an education and better themselves before the women have to support them all.”

The irony here, besides the fact that he shares Star Jones’s big gay ex’s name, is that Reynolds was speaking at an event sponsored by the NAACP.

Well I guess I will step out on the limb and say I agree with him. What did he say that was so wrong. Especially coming from illinois. He was pretty much on point when it came to minority women. What he said about the men was pretty much on point. Maybe it’s a case of don’t shoot the messenger. If a black person would have stated the obvious truth, we would have acted like he found a cure for cancer. I didn’t find his statement rasict. More like the sad truth !

    • jenny

I have to agree with you. The double standard in the AA community amazes me. He just stated facts. People should deal with it and do better.

    • Rob

I dont agree with him or the statement because if you know about the drug game, it is not an easy thing to do. Picking up a book is much easier, the minority men who do it, do it because it is an avenue for quick money and that is all they know. Selling drugs is not an easy thing to do because it is a hustle within itself. There is too much money in the drug game and that is why minorities do it because of the millions of dollars you can make from the hustle of drugs. It becomes a hustle that pays very well and an avenue for thousands of dollars.

    • ArmyWife

I agree as well…seems as though when someone of another race says ANYTHING remotely negative about the AA race it is viewed as a racist comment. Not only am I an AA, but a somewhat educated one, and I know first hand how an education can open doors for individuals. If not for more opportunities, then surely an education can help you understand the difference between a racist comment and someone’s opinion…people are entitled to speak about what they see. The man is just being honest.

    • http://bossip kevin

Rob- I don’t know if you know it or not but you basically just co-signed him!

    • ROB

No, read the statement again. Selling drugs is a very hard thing to do. Picking up a book is easier than drug dealing, not the other way around. The drug game is a very lucrative business that has college educated men smuggling drugs because they can make millions of dollars from the trade.

    • Rob

Kevin, Avenue for quick money doesn’t mean it is easier to do, which drugs might be for some. What I mean is that these minorities have more accessible avenue and opportunity to that trade. If there wasnt money in the drug game many of these kids wouldnt do it. They arent doing it because it is easy, they do it because they have access to it and it makes alot of money in their areas. The Drug game being an easier way of life than getting an education is subjective. You cant cosign a subjective thought. I dont agree with him saying that it is a easier job. I dont condone selling drugs at all, but I know that the choice to sell drugs is not based on it being easy because selling drugs takes a lot of hustling.

    • Sharie

I agree w/ you two- to me he didn’t say anything out the way… I’m so damn sick of black folks always blaming someone else. We’re never as a people gonna move forward if we don’t take responsibility & keep evading the truth.

    • She said it.

I agree with you. Why is it when a white person makes the same observation as a black–he is racist? Doesn’t make any sense. Now had he finessed his words like a polished politician, no one would have known any difference.

    • spikepine

Perhaps he should have said, “Too many black men”, instead of saying “Black men”. You can not generalize an entire race of men. I am married to a black man, my son is a black man and I have many black family men in my neighborhood who work hard for their families – My cousins are lawyers, engineers, contractors, etc. They are hardworking black men. So for him to simply say, “black men”, was wrong. Although, too many young black men are not making the right decisions for their lives. They are ending up in prison and when they are released, there are no jobs for too many of them. A lack of fathers in too many black homes has created a very large problem for some of our communities.

First of all if you can’t face the truth, it’s a lost cause. Stero-types?_ wth do you think we got waka floka & soulja boy etc for…thats where the depiction of a black man come from. So don’t blame him. Second he is an illinois representive can you say chicago so of course he need an agenda to better serve chicago and it’s problems. You all are always sounding like fools. Now this white man is the reason for division? When will we take responsibilities for ourselves and stop blaming others. You can’t offer soultions to a problem if you won’t even face the truth !

  • Mzbklyn

    Smh…so sad but it’s true…

    • RealTalk

Realtalk – I am an AA and honestly, this man told the truth. Keep it 100. Many of our BM – not ALL, would rather select street living oppose to picking up a book and enrolling into college. I conquer, but don’t beat this guy up for being honest. Come on ppl – stop trippn.

  • STEFANY

African American males deal drugs as oppose to going to college because most of them come from single parent homes where college and education aren’t being enforced. It’s not about race it’s about socio-economic and poverty status. Poor whites do the same exact thing when faced with the same conditions, what about the meth labs operating in the trailor parks being ran by white men. If he want to talk about drug dealing and low education talk about the poor white trash selling drugs too.

Black folks stop letting these white folk allow us to hang ourselves. Whatd did you think the purpose of these out of wacks rapper was for. I know you didn’t think uncle Tom was about to waste his time dragging the black man through the mud, when he can make him drag himself ! Take responsibility ! It’s time & the only way !

Just because he didn’t mention that “white people do it too” doesn’t make what he said any less true! How come when anyone critcizes the black male, everyone gets bent out of shape. Well It’s not just white people thinking you need to step your game up. Everyone of all races around the world thinks so, including your own kind! I’m not surprised or shocked he said what he said because it is just TRUE! Most black men don’t have anyone to look up to besides rappers, athletes, or the local kingpin. If people would stop being so defensive and really listen to what these people are saying about us, then we would so something about it!

    • chaka1

I can’t get angry over this one. I did some volunteer work in a poor community recently and this was the number one issue. It is a socio-economic problem too.

    • my two cents...

did you not get the memo? bmales are the sacred cow. they are not to criticized AT ALL.

notice he did not say ALL minorities anything. yet folks can’t wait to talk about not all blah blah blah.

notice these same folks are quiet as church mice when folks go in on bw. IF someone said, bw are having too many oow (out of wedlock) children, that would be a true statement. anyone screaming not ALL bw are having oow children needs to pay closer attention and hush.

IF despite the many scenarios where folks have gone to jail or an early grave behind drug dealing; not to mention the rampage it reeks on communities, folks still are lured, one can only surmise it is because of the possibility of easy large sums of money. by comparison, one could devour all the free information out there. apply themselves. hustle through school. excellent grades=grants/scholarships=lucrative careers. there is an element of easy whether folks want to tell the truth or not.

rapidly approaching is the day when only the dumbest of women will work hard to provide for a man, when by its very essence a man is a provider and protector.

i don’t think bm’s spirits are broken. i just think they are not doing what they need to do, collectively and in large enough numbers, because folks will cry racism and make excuses until they are exhausted. the same can not be said for bw. there is a tendency to hold bw accountable for their share as well as others. hence the blame bw receive when they unsuccessfully attempt to socialize male children to be men. GOD never intended for bw to undertake such an exercise in futility!

no truth telling is well received when the messenger is a wm or a bw. in fairness, when the biracial prez suggested more bm needed to man up and parent their children, there was a big stinky fuss then, too.

It just amazes me that how some white people know everything about the hood and black person. But they probably never been to the hood or let along even talk to a black individual or even know one. These people think they are so high and mighty that they can look on others. Nobody wants to live in the hood or sell drugs but their are a lot of people out here that don’t have many options. And I bet you Al Reynolds will be the first to say I am a Christian this and that. And these are the people running America. I be damned!

    • J-SMOOTH

TRUST ME THEY A– KNOW AND BE IN THE HOOD BECAUSE THEY BE THE MAIN ONE BUYIN DRUGS.

  • Alicia

I understand why some of you are saying he isn’t being racist, but do you also not see the danger in what he is saying, when he makes a broad statement like that. What do you think it says to the hundreds of thousands of black scholars and men who have never touched drugs in their lives. He should have said some black men and some white men. It should never be about race when you are talking about negativity, unless you are being inclusive. And I have a question for all of the people who are saying he is telling the truth, what do you think would be happening to the majority of young white men, if they had to go through racism and mistreatment the way black men have had to go through for years. Even the law abiding black men. Please answer that question for me.

  • HARDMIKE

Whenever someone has something negative to say about black men, yall bitter females co-sign like yo credit score 850, let him would have say something stereotypical about black women, shat would have hit the roof

P.S. if you attract drug dealers and low lifes that says more about you than it does black men and according to the census ther are about the same amount of men in college as there are in prison so in theory if you are ONLY meeting the ones from prison, maybe, just maybe you the type of woman who falls for image, fake men only have hold up the image, a real man has the image because he has done the work to get there, think about that

MOST OF THE BLACK BOYS WHO WENT TO SCHOOL WITH ME GRADUATED COLLEGE. (IM THE ONE WHO QUIT, THINKING I WAS CUTE)PLUS SOME OF THE DRUG DEALERS ARE BETTER PEOPLE THAN SOME OF THE COPS. SAD BUT TRUE. NOT ALL DEALERS ARE BAD PEOPLE. SO BYE!

  • Dr Black

They will never answer that question for you alicia because most of these people are probably white men pretending to be black. if you notice, whenever a white person does something horrible in the media, no white person comes in here to tear them down. But whenever a black person is in the media for something horrible white people run in here with the racist rants and so on. And you said a mouth full TMB, that white man is only talking about what he HEARD. I am sure he doesn’t have any history of being in the hood, or going there. I doubt he even knows any young black men. GTFOOH

    • Reality

We tear them down because there is a fine line between building them up and excuseing their wrongs. There is such an excessive amount of black men doing DUMB SH*T for absolutely no reason. If you have cable you should check out this murder detective reality show on A&E called “The First 48”. And you will see the stupidity, the ignorance, and the downright foolish acts that many of of our kids and other innocent people from our community are involved in on a DAILY basis.

    • Uhh yeah ok

Did you ever notice that show plays hip hop beats? hmmm

  • ArmyWife

LOL@ Kevin…about @Rob!! Yes, he indeed co-signed on that one.

  • Caramel Cat™

The problem with his statements is this: it may have some very strong truths to it, Lord knows I look at some of our young black men and wonder how on earth they missed the memo that having an education is the key to a successful future not ridden with criminal records and jail time…however, people fail to understand exactly WHY so many black men turn to this lifestyle. Yes, I agree that there needs to be a desire to LEARN instead of just ‘playing ball’. But what has society done in the past 50 years or so to break the black man’s spirit? The issue is a lot deeper than what meets the eye…

    • my two cents...

please stop that! IF the bw can keep her head and motivation up; there is NO excuse for the bm. AT NO TIME has this society treated our existence, image, and humanity with any type of dignity or respect.

aren’t the men supposed to be stronger than the women?!!!! ugh! it is SICKENING!

  • Peppa

@HARDMIKE thank you thank you thank you my brother. i am never going to allow the white media to make me go against my brothers, because there are tooooooooo many good black men for that. Some of yall hoes I swear give me a sharp pain in my ovaries with your crock of shyt. You complain about there are no good blk men, when you know damn well you don’t want nothing but the bling bling shining in your eye balls of a drug dealer or rapper. WHen you see the intlligent brother who is not rocking the Jordans, you put that skeeza hand up to his face and tell him to bounce. And when he gets that degree, and six digit figur, and only white women were there checking for him, then you wanna call him a sell out. Make up ya damn minds. And for all you wanna be coat tail riders, get with it. White people NEVER say anything about black people for ANY REASON OTHER THAN to make us look bad. PERIOD.

    • daisy jay

      @peppa
this is gonna sound annoying probably, but i agree with everything you said. people are too busy complaining about the negative and don’t do anything to fix it. they complain to other people like the problem will get solved if they do. do i agree with what the guy said? i can’t say that what he said wasn’t true because it somewhat is, but there are a lot of good black men AND women as well. people just pretend it doesn’t exist or it’s rare (which it ISN’T). these current rappers/athletes aren’t making things any better either. setting bad examples and that jazz. “niqqas ain’t sh!t” and “black women are nothing but hoes with tons of kids” REALLY?! blacks tear each other down more than whites do and it’s extremely sad. it’s easier to hate than to love, but love isn’t impossible. stop tearing each other down or else everything will STAY. THE. SAME.
