With her success and rave reviews from her role as “Celie” in the broadway production of The Color Purple, Fantasia Barrino is in negotiations to star in another big musical based on the life of Ada (Bricktop) Smith. Bricktop rose to fame as an African-American nightlife queen in the 1920’s in Paris, France.

Via NY Daily News:

Bricktop’s is a great story. She rose from humble beginnings in Alderson, W. Va., to become the toast of Paris in the Roaring ’20s, where she was first employed overseas by Cole Porter to teach dances such as the Charleston at his parties. By 1929, she owned her own nightclubs such as The Music Box, Le Grand Duc and her famous Chez Bricktop, where she entertained Porter, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Porter wrote “Miss Otis Regrets” for her. She even worked with Josephine Baker and Mabel Mercer.

The 20’s are a good look for Fantasia, those Flappers rocked the finger waves and shimmy dresses tough. The negotitations are still in the works and the show hits Broadway in 2009. In the meantime, Fantasia is still on the roster for The Color Purple. Okay, Tasia, way to keep a steady job…keep up the good work!
