Hi Hater: Quincy Jones Says Kanye West Can’t Compare To His Musical Genius

- By Bossip Staff

Old Head of the year, Quincy Jones, has been in the press a lot lately for obvious reasons…(His Q: Soul Bossa Nostra album dropping recently) and he has some “interesting” things to say about some of the “artists” in the game right now, including Yeezy:

Us: “Thriller” was done by T-Pain and Robin Thicke — in a different way, obviously.

QJ: Auto-tune! Well, we had to with T-Pain. I go back to 1963 when nobody knew what it was!

Us: Speaking of Michael Jackson, some of his old stuff is being released now as a new album. Thoughts?

QJ: I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet. Somebody called me up and asked me if it was Michael, and I said it sounds like Michael. But it’s backed up by so many voices where I can’t really dig down deep enough or I haven’t really had time to dig deep enough to identify it. But no way it should be coming out. It should have all stayed in the vault.

Us: Why?

QJ: It seems like everybody is trying to put everything out that they can with him. I don’t understand it. It’s all to make money. He wouldn’t have wanted it to come out this way. They must just be trying to make as much money as they can. I don’t know know why else they are doing it.

Us: Why? Because he was such a perfectionist?

QJ: Right. He wouldn’t have wanted anything out there he didn’t put his final touches on. It’s a crazy time right now. We’re also looking at the descent of the record business. It’s a very curious time right now. I’ve been in the business 60 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this.

Us: Does it make you sad?

QJ: Yeah, it does. I think in 10 months to a year, the record industry is going to be in trouble. Big trouble. It’s all 95 or 99% piracy.

Us: Is there anyone now that you think has the spark that Michael did?

QJ: Akon, Ludacris or Usher. A lot of them do, but the opportunities aren’t there anymore. I’m worried about the young singers and songwriters in the business now. It really is a rough time. It doesn’t mean a damn thing because they still steal everything. We’re going to have to figure it out, man. I don’t know what the answer is.

Us: How do you stay happy and positive?

QJ: I have six daughters from 17 to 57, and I have one son. My foundation is one of my biggest passions now too. We’re working all over the world — Cambodia and Brazil, we helped out in Hurricane Katrina. Those are the secrets in life. Love, laugh, live, and give, and that’s the way I live my life.

Us: Kanye West is similar to you in that he’s the producer everybody wants to work with in the last decade….

QJ: How man? No way. Did he write for a symphony orchestra? Does he write for a jazz orchestra? Come on, man. He’s just a rapper. There’s no comparison. I’m not putting him down or making a judgement or anything, but we come from two different sides of the planet. I spent 28 years learning my first skill. I don’t rap. It’s not the same thing. A producer has to have some sort of skills that enable him to be a producer. It’s totally different to know what to do with 16 woodwinds you know from piccolos down to bass clarinet. It’s a whole different mindset. No comparison. None.

Us: What do you think of him?

QJ: I don’t think about him much. He’s a great rapper, but there are a lot of good rappers. I just did The View with Ludacris, who’s one of my favorites. He’s a beautiful human being and college educated. I joke with him and say, ‘How did ‘Move B*tch Get Out The Way’ come out of you?’ But I was raised around the Mafia when I was a kid in Chicago in the 30s. Chicago’s rough. I’m from the streets, I know what’s up!

Us: What do you think of Lady Gaga?

QJ: She’s great. Some guy misquoted me in some article and said I don’t listen to everybody — meaning her. I’m not listening to everybody, man. Everybody has their own thing, but it’s show business. Gaga is like Madonna Jr. A lot of people follow Madonna. I don’t, but I don’t blame those that do. She’s had a long career and done a lot. There are different strokes for different folks, man, and there is nothing right or wrong. It’s what you like, you know. I’m against categories. If she can do it, do it. If she knows how to do it, just do it.

Hold up just a second here, Quincy…you gonna compare Usher, Ludacris, and AKON (Akon are you serious?) to Michael Jackson, and in the same breath say that Kanye West can’t compare to you?!?!?!

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but damn, there’s no way ANYONE should be comparing Akon to Michael Jackson. SMH.

  • i cant take him seriously

He cant be serious.. and next month Kanye will be writing for and conducting jazz and symphony orchestras.. we all know he loves to prove people wrong

    • Lodi, NJ

Don’t play yourself. Kanye’s not talented enough to do that. He might “sample” an orchestra but he knows jack about real music. Q is a legend. Played with Miles, Sinatra, Parker. Many of the greats. Wrote soundtracks, produced arguably the greatest album of all time.

  • King Lew

I love Quincy but he made some terrible points… Is Kanye as musically trained in the art of orchestra and concerto music… no. Is Kanye a better r&b/popular music producer than him… YES! You have to give the old heads respect but let’s call it what it is. Akon=MJ? Are you serious? I don’t know Q, it might be time for reservations to that adult living facility.

    • Whateva

Cmon man hold old are you, 15? Are you really trying to compare someone with 60 YEARS of being successful in the business to Kanye West? What are you going to say next Chris Brown is better than James? Really man, really, I mean cmon man REALLY? Whateva

    • tisha

Kanye West will NEVER be the producer Quincy Jones is. You have to be a kid to think there is even a slight comparison or you really don’t have a clue who Quincy Jones is.

    • Lodi, NJ

You can’t compare the pablum that Kanye produces to the genius of Quincy Jones who has created music out of thin air. Kanye creates his music from other peoples’ music. And having a hit is not the same as having true talent. Especially in today’s sad musical climate.

  • support the elderly

I’m just going to blame it on the old age and conclude that he’s going senile

    • VirgoJewel

LMAO@ the user name and comment

  • collegegirl12

He said his favorite rapper is Ludacris?!and compared Akon to Michael Jackson lol, come on now Quincy Jones. He is clearly getting old and senile.

  • pkmelody

quincy on that black boule stuff, ewwwww

  • When?

    Great points Quincy!
And just because you dont listen to Akon, your missing the point. Have you checked his global status?

Making it in mere America does not mean you are doing it big

  • champhf

please explain to me how Quincy is lieing… check his reume…!!!

  • champhf

check Quincy’s resume and get back at me.

Q IS RIGHT. He may very well be the greatest musician any of us will ever know.Kanye is easily forgettable.NO ONE will even remember Kanye’s GARBAGE inside of 10 years from now.Probably would’nt be able to fill the banquet room of a Holiday Inn in that time.We will be listening to Q’s music forever.

  • Concerned

Quincy Jones produced the theme song for “Sanford and Son”!Kayne is a good producer;but he is not on Quincy Jones’s level!

  • You Smell Me??

You have to earn your place in musical history…

Quincy is in the Hall of Fame in a sense.

Kanye is working toward being a Hall of Famer. You have to give him another 15, 20 years to be at that level. You just cant put yourself at that level…

What’s up with him holding his daughter Kidada like that in the picture that looks very inappropiate.

Quincy may be a musical genius but he is an idiot for what he did to Michael. REAL TALK. MICHAEL IS THE ACTUAL, FACTUAL MUSICAL GENIUS.

  • Corner

    Amen to that!!

  • ray charles

He is telling the truth! Rappers ain’t SHIT! They can’t sing, they can’t play an instrument, they sure as hell can’t read music, they all got a 12 word vocabulary and they are the dumbest mofos on the planet. Rappers ain’t no artist they just a bunch of reatrds rhymning words. BLUES, ROCK AND ROLL, SOUL, GOSPEL, JAZZ, R & B, NOW THAT IS MUSIC MADE BY REAL ARTIST WHO KNOW MUSIC.

  • Big B

No way in hell, does Kanye West compare to Quincy Jones!!!
    Besides his incredible jazz pedigree,
the man gave Michael’s most memorable, not to talk about
    “The Dude”!!!
    Don’t get mad, get better!!!

I Agree that if you check quincy’s resume you will probably just have to STFU. Quincy is the man, has been the man, and will be the man till he gives it up. Kanye will grow to be the man, but not yet…he is still doing stupid stuff. once he gets beyond that, then he can pick up the mantle.

  • DDub

Quincy is right. He’s a legendary producer who’s a trained musician. Kanye is good but he isn’t producing a lot of his own records anymore. He has a distinct sound and he’s popular and he will go down in history, contrary to what some think… but Q produced Michael Jackson’s Thriller. One album that sold over 100 million copies. That’s Jay’s and Eminem’s career in one album.

  • Detroit

People he has composed for: Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington and he was the bandleader Lionel Hampton need I say more…No comparison at all…..

  • jerry

    I have to agree..

  • champhf

check Quincy’s resume and get back at me.

  • http://u bklynlady

Get his old crow his meds. Ol fool…NEVER liked Quincy pink toe loving behind.

Can’t deny his genius but c’mon son, you fcked up Michaels music by putting T-pain on it.

  • http://u bklynlady

agreed, HOWEVER putting akon, luda and usher in MJ’s catagory is foolish

  • KelevraOne

Rappers are musicians just like everybody else. Many rappers are interested in music and do know how to play an instrument and can read music. Do not belittle the talent of talented people because you do not like their style of music.
