Alicia Keys Talks Celebs Into Boycotting Facebook & Twitter For The Greater Good

- By Bossip Staff

She might still be on maternity leave, but Alicia Keys is already back to her karma-balancing, do-gooder ways. And of course charity’s always more fun when other rich people get involved.

[Lady] Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher and other celebrities have joined a new campaign called Digital Life Sacrifice on behalf of Keys’ charity, Keep a Child Alive. The entertainers plan to sign off of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day. The participants will sign back on when the charity raises $1 million.

“It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on,” Keys said in a phone interview from New York last week.

For the campaign – which also includes Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz – celebrities have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths.

“It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up,” Keys said. “It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that.”

The campaign, she said, puts the disease in perspective.

“This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention,” said Keys, who has more than 2.6 million followers on Twitter.

The foundation, which began in 2003, will accept donations through text messages and bar-code technology, which is featured in the charity’s Buy Life campaign. Raised efforts support families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

“We’re trying to sort of make the remark: Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we’re all from?” said Leigh Blake, the president and co-founder of Keep a Child Alive.

“It’s about love and respect and human dignity,” she added.

Of course Kimmy Cakes is the first to leak her ad…

When you say or do something with the desire to hurt someone (malicious intent), you are doing evil.

If you do more evil than good (benevolent acts), you’re an evil person.

You’re the most evil person on this site. Is that how you want us to remember you?

I know you won’t be able to apply this, but it might reach someone more capable-

wow. are y’all just going to miss the point of this and just make wack jokes on kim?

  • mista tyson

this is a bit much. im all 4 charity but what about those millions of U.S citizens dying from hiv/aids…celebs really should focuse more on doing good deeds to those of us who keeps them rich. im certain the revenue generated from africa & india are less than 1% of their wealth. HELP THOSE WHO HELP YOU!

    • N/A

      U are sooo right!

    • Shawna

I’ve never been to Africa and have never seen the destruction AIDS has there but to me seems like the wealth for fighting AIDS should be spread around a little. Just my opinion. Like I said I don’t know what it’s like in Africa but AIDS is world wide not just Africa. Is there enough being done here for people to only support what is going on there? Love Alicia, but you’ve got to stop and think. There has been a lot of money raised for Africa lately but no mention of helping anywhere else. If I’m wrong and Africa is so much worse of than here, I hope the fundraiser is a big success for Africa and the people there.

Kim K needs to be ashamed of herself. She is ALWAYS leaking smtg

A.Keys is doing great work with AIDS/HIV charity & i think it is a great idea

  • T

That’s what I’m saying. This isn’t some random publicity stunt, this is a campaign to save lives of people who will literally die without the work Keep A Child Alive does.

People are debating about whether this is a good campaign idea, but while we’re here analyzing it and critiquing those who chose to participate, KCA is fighting to literally keep people and their children alive. We need see the bigger picture.

    • her?yeahher

it’s a cool idea but…. what if it backfires and ppl realize that they REALLY DON’T NEED those celeb twitter and fb updates hourly after all?
Considering the state of the economy it’s a tough thing to ask people who give a lot (albeit in different ways)to big companies and mindless institutions regularly. Maybe a better protest would be to ask CORPORATIONS to do more (they have more to work with) and getting celebs and regular folk to join in on that!

Remember the Haitian earthquake crisis? or Katrina? how much money did everyday citizens raise for those causes, and how much of that money has gone to helping those in need? I personally, am TIRED of FEEDING THE RICH. let them help some ppl for a change and quit trying to get into my slim pockets!

  • nana

She gives back, I LIKE that about her!!!!

  • Ariona Taylor

Why bribe fans to donate to charity? “Participants will sign back on when charity raises one million dollars.” Everyone knows what AIDS can do. If people want to donate, fine. If not, fine. Y’all are rich and contracting all kinds of diseases “on the low”

    • The Ugly Truth

I went & read ur blog.

  • mista tyson

    @ariona thank you…

  • http://bossip shay

No disrespect to the charity itself, but damn everybody on that list can stay off of twitter. All of them get on nerves and can shut da hell up ! I don’t follow none of them !

Yeah we really need to address this distribution of wealth thing.

    • Thickykins, LOL!

  • shannon

Glok I am still wondering why yuour mother did not abort you. You are a nast disgusting bottom feeder who should literally jump off a bridge. You wonder why poor innocent kids have to suffer in life, like these kids that they are helping and a dirty dog like you are allowed to live and breathe clean air. No justice whatsoever.

  • Nameisrequired

How vain is this? I understand it’s for a good cause but donating (paying) celebs making millions of dollars a year to get back on twitter? Really? That’s where we’ve gotten to as a society?

How bout you donate 10% of your salary and keep yacking away on twitter?

  • The Ugly Truth

Shannon, Sheri, & Mia ur GIG is up. STFD & STFU

  • prissa

Exactly, Ariona! “Celebs will sign back on when $1mil is raised”. I don’t like that. Why can’t the celebs donate their $? They have MORE than enough. Meanwhile you’ve
got unemployment rates at nearly 10% and average folks struggling to make it on a daily basis yet ur gonna hold the fans hostage till $1mil is raised? I realize its 4 a good cause but it seems backwards to me. F ya’ll and your twitter, FB & myspace accounts.

  • Mia

@prissa its always the guilty that respond.

  • Mia

@Prissa my apologies. I meant @ the ugly truth.

  • MissPerfect

I find twitter as pointless as Kim Kardashian.. but hey i hope it works out how many artists are doing things to actually help those in need many !

  • S.a.s.s.y24

Do us all a favor and shut up

  • S.a.s.s.y24

The campaign doesn’t make since, It’s a great idea. But why are celebrities laying in caskets it’s not a death if your going to log back on when you reach the million dollar sign.

  • MegaHottie

Attention hoes. Use a funking condom that’s it!
