Iconic MC Lyte On The Lil Kim And Nicki Minaj Situation: Nicki Is More Of An International Star… She’s Not Worried About The Block

- By Bossip Staff

MC Lyte made her way to the stage for VH1 Divas with Sugarland. While backstage, VH1 caught up with the legendary emcee to find out her thoughts on the Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim beef. Most female emecees choose to steer clear of this entire madness but not MC Lyte… she spoke her mind and all we can do is respect her for that. Appears that she’s on Nicki side but then again she kind of explains where Lil Kim is coming from

VH1: Nicki Minaj…

MC LYTE: You know, I look at her as a culmination of all of the female emcees that are and were with her spice all on top of it and she’s uniquely different for this time because she’s equipped business wise. She totaly understands the business, she understands what it means to be different in your approach and I love it. When I listen to her I feel like I’m on a voyage because you never know exactly where she’s going to end up.

VH1: Who would you say her flow is similiar too?

MC LYTE: No one that I know. I think in style, I like to think of Missy because when I first heard Missy and I heard all of the little noises she use to make and I would be like “what the hell? Oh Wow, I wanna learn how to do that…” and now you know it just feels like Nicki on steroids. It’s like… she’s just thoroughly entertaining.

VH1: Thoughts on the Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj Battle?

MC LYTE: I can easily say it’s unfortunate but I’ve had my diss wars and my battles back in the day…

VH1: Who was your diss against?

MC LYTE: Antoinette. [laughs] Which we never met by the way, which was really odd. Oh, we did battle one time, face to face but I think literally the difference between us was I had had a couple of records out before her so, I had made a couple of fans before she did and that was the only thing that separated us, you know, in terms of who was going to win the battle. I just had more people backing me. So, I was lucky I came out when I did…

With regards to Nicki and Kim, we were actually just talking about it in the dressing room and I feel like right now there’s room for everyone but those who really need to be worried by Nicki’s record is Fergie, Gwen Stefani, Nelly Fertado… Nicki is coming out to win She’s not thinking of the block, she’s not thinking of the city She’s able to handle so many areas of what it takes right now to be an international star. So, hats off to everybody’s that’s doing it but I see the vision that Nicki she’s for the herself that people probably didn’t see before.

VH1: Do you think Kim coming at Nicki was warranted?

MC LYTE: Same reason I went after Antoinette, it’s what an emcee thrives on and you can not tell me that any female emcee listening to either one of them don’t wanna spit a verse themselves because it’s that competitive nature that hip hop brings to the community…

MC Lyte is speaking her mind but also keeping it all in the safe zone…

    • MaryJane

International I think not. Jay-z, beyonce, and usher (has a cd that went diamond), and Rhianna are examples of international artist

  • Britnasty

  • iWinYouLOSE

Well said MC Lyte….Kim and Nicki are different and are in different leagues. Nicki wants to be international and wants fans from all walks of life. Kim seems to have music for a certain fan base, but nevertheless she’s a legend in her own right. I hope they both keep their mouths closed about each other. It would be nice if they came together and gave these male MCs a run for their money =)

  • MaryJane

Well if nicki is international than missy is too, and her and kim need to come out with a diss record cause thats exactly who this chick is bitin from. Thanks MC LYTE for bringing that to the LYTE, didn’t even peep that. I guess they had to add some extra spice cause people were catching on to that kim clone clown

Icon said the streets can’t be international. Icon should have kept her mouth shut and said no comment. Nicki is not international. She’s childish and foolish. I don’t respect what she does I reject it. Then to say that the folks from the city or the block don’t have international status or base then why the white boys rockign rap in the car alongside me. Icon needs to learn to shut up before she eat her words.

  • xoxo

Polite says nikki wasn’t starting trouble. they were!

  • shell

think about it… MC lyte basically said nicki is a hip-pop star! Lmao…. the same thing i have been feeling since day one! LOL

  • Teena

I just thought about it and MC Lyte.. I gotta ride with what she said.. it makes sense.. and then after hearing Pink Friday… she is absolutely RIGHT! Nikki is 2010…. But she is a mix of all female rappers before her… I gotta give it to her.. she doing her thing.. Thanks Lyte for giving me another way of looking at this.

I wouldnt care how many people co sign with Nicki I just am not feeling her. Im not knocking those who do,u have ur opinion I have mine. She is not what I want to hear.

  • confidenty_ugly

Too much time devoted to this … I wouldnt be surprised if this “hype” was created by the two of them to encourage respective fans to go out and purchase music. I often imagine them talking on the phone giggling about how people are eating up this stupid chit.

  • joyrptr

IMO, the reason I and others are not feeling Nicki is because she is being put out like she reps Hip Hop and she DOES NOT. She is a pop star. I give her props cause she knows how to get those dollas from the bubble gum crowd, but she is NOT Hip Hop. She cannot be the Queen of Hip Hop. It’s like calling Charlie Pride the King of R&B. He’s black and could sing but he was not R&B. Jus sayin….

There is nothing hood about almost gold in a week! SOme of the biggest stars aren’t pulling those numbers Mary Jane! I respect MC Lyte for her honesty and I agree with her. Lil’ Kim was great, but she had her time. Yes her music in my opinion is better, but she as an older woman needs to be graceful and not bitter!

  • Shaleen

To me, Nicki Minaj is only good for being featured in other rapper/singer songs just like T-Pain. Has a solo artist, sorry she doesn’t cut it. I can’t even stand her “singing”. I don’t even bother listening to her songs.

One word sums it all up! JEALOUSY! Its rampant in the black community. East Coast/West Coast crap! So much so that rappers have died because of this nonsense. Every one have their time then you need to get off the stage. Support each other and make music rather than fighting, fighting, fighting. What is wrong with us black people? Is there something in the food these days that have us hating on each other like that! Tavis Smiley hated on Obama, Jesse Jackson hated on Obama, then the rap beefs with biggie and tupac etc What is wrong! Now LiL Kim and Nicki. She is jealous of Nicki’s success of being the first female rapper to have so many number ones on bill board. I hope Nicki just make music and ignore these fools.
