Fox News Anchor Files Lawsuit To Defend His Right To Use The N-Word

- By Bossip Staff

A Fox 5 news anchor is scheduled to appear in court to defend his use of the N-Word in a meeting. Apparently, he was punished for using the dreaded word while his African American co-workers were not.

Tom Burlington, a white, Philadelphia Fox 29 news anchor, is the latest in a line of n-word ramblers, including Michael Richards (Seinfeld’s Kramer) and Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Here’s the twist: While Richards and Schlessinger were tried in the court of public opinion, Burlington is actually going to court on Jan. 18. In fact, Burlington is suing his former employer. He claims that he shouldn’t have been fired for using the n-word in a staff meeting, when three African-American employees who said or wrote it in the workplace went unpunished.

In a 2007 team meeting about an upcoming report on the NAACP’s ceremonial “burial” of the n-word, Burlington asked, “Does this mean we can finally say the word ‘n—er’?” The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that “Burlington told a colleague … he did not necessarily expect her to use the word in her story,” but “he thought that doing so gave the story more credence.”

According to court transcripts and depositions, Burlington also told former co-anchor Joyce Evans that someone called her a “n—er b–ch” after the infamous staff meeting.

Burlington contends that his remarks were made out of context and his utterance of the dreaded word was used in a question, not in a derogatory fashion or with malice. Judge R. Barclay Surrick seems to agree. In denying Fox’s dismissal request, Surrick said that federal courts “had not determined whether a double standard, if found in this case, would violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” which deals with equal opportunity in employment.

He has a valid point, but why do white people WANT to use the word so much?

He has a lot of nerve. Let him say it and experience the worse a$$ beating on earth. Those demonic, rancid people never quit! As long as they exist, we will always have racism.

  • ignoranceisbliss

This is very amusing that this man has the gall to file a lawsuit to use a word that black folks use so commonly.

    “What up ni**a”
    “That’s my ni**a”
    “Kill that ni**a”
    “Jigga my ni**a”

The list can go on an on and in other parts of the country white boys and even Latinos call themselves ni**a a word that is censored on this blog….File this under who cares just like 40 acres and a mule.

Happy MLK day he walked so the poverty pimp commission could highlight BS lawsuits.

  • Soul Touch

I had a coworker say it as she was relaying a story. She wasn’t using the word but quoting someone else.

My right arm twitched to do a back hand.

  • Mr.GQ

If the word is derogatory to black people, why do the blacks use it? Does the meaning change when they use it? What foolishness! The man did nothing wrong here and should not be fired!

    • Knowldge of the beast

When I was younger I used it here and there. But as I got older and thought about it, we look really ignorant saying N-gga this and N-gga that. I mean you know how we look to other people. You know how confusing it is to white people who see use calling each other n-gga. They wanna join in the fun. They would love to call you a n-gga to your face. I mean whats the fascination with these hard headed people that just want to be ignorant, a low life, and think it’s cool. If anyone would take the time to get knowledge of self, uneducated and educated alike, we would never use that word. The thing I hate the most is when dummys use it in a public setting. One time it was all these white people around and this dude was saying my n-gga this, my ni-gga that. I’m saying to my self please stop that sh-t. I don’t care if your favorite rapper say it, or who ever. Be your own person and stop the bullsh-t.

We only WANT to use the word when confronted with ridiculous ignorance. No different then when you bump in to white people that do nothing to better themselves who get called “white trash.” The “N” word is only so empowered because people keep being offended by its usage. Anytime anyone uses it black or white, I cringe. But, damn it, sometimes it just fits. Thank you Chris Rock. If people would start to ignore it, it will loose its power to really mean much of anything. Im a wap. I’m a dago. I’m a pollock. And I really don’t care about some ignorant fools opinion of me if that’s as far as they can look. Neither should anyone else. Its just a word. Don’t we all have bigger fish to fry on this in 2011? Really? This stuff usually amounts to yet another “find the racists” which hunt and Ill never get it. How bout just focusing on the serious repeat offenders and let the occasional “cracker” off the hook once in a while?

    • Soul Touch

THANK YOU. There is a big difference between a black person and a ni**er.

    • Thaddious

Thank you, Afrodite. Chris Rock used the word to denigrate (some of) his own people. Willie Lynch was alive and well that night.

A lot of the most straight-laced Tiger Woods types will start dropping the N-Word when they’re angry with a black person, yet they would never use that word in another context.

    • Curious1 aka Flawless Beauty

It will NEVER DIE…because Rappers MAKE MILLIONS off of it and they will NEVER SQUASH it..and the world thinks all the rest of us follow the rapper as a leader…

    • Thaddious

Soul Touch shared a lot of their story.

Our story is – All original people refer to themselves today by the names whites gave them as they conquered them.

Before that, no other people thought in those terms. That’s why it’s so difficult to determine the ethnicity of Jesus and Cleopatra; The originals never thought that way.

Did you know there were already Africans in America living and trading with the Native Americans when Columbus arrived? Whites introduced racial conflict by dividing the human family in the name of conquest.

  • Mr.GQ

Black people keep themselves down by using the word. Why is it an issue when a white person uses it? It shows how idiotic and uneducated some black people are. (I am black by the way)

    • tommykimon

Sorry he needs to be fired. He should not be using this word at work in front of his colleagues. In the privacy of his own home he can use it as much as he wants.

  • MISS ME WIT DAT BULLSH#T

Why do African Americans insist on using it so much?

  • if anything be noble

He got punished for using the n word at Fox? Quit playin.

    • CAN AM

Of all places. However, he was at Fox local news verses Fox cable news where he would’ve been promoted and given his own show.

  • The Commenter Formerly Known as White Devil

I think some folks are like kids. “He gets to say it. Why can’t I say it. Waaahhhh!”

    • CAN AM

      LOL!

  • bahamas/chicago/cayman girl

No one should use the word people of African orgins or not because of the negative connotation. I know they say take the power out of the word but, if that was the case why are people still offended when any other race uses the word? Stop using it period and it won’t be a problem!
If it was taken out of context I don’ think he should’ve been fired and its true, if others can say it in the work place without ramification then why was he fired? Fair is fair!

  • Pam

I’m SO SICK of the old “well they say it why cant i” argument. how stupid are you?! EVERY SINGLE BLACK PERSON ON THIS EARTH DOES NOT USE THAT WORD. some do, many DONT. do you like vanilla icecream? and you’re white? well that must mean every single white person likes vanilla icecream, right? no? well his “they all say it” argument is just as rediculous. cut it out.

  • IDIOTS

just like Mr.GQ stated earlier.why is it ok for blacks to use it but no one else??Ohh yeah thats right bc its suppose to be impowering when we use the word.Yah right..do you know how ignorant yall sound..and on MLK Jr day at that.He would be rolling over in his grave now.I am sure this is not what the dream consisted of.It is true we give power to words but if you dont like it when Heather says it but Keisha from round the way can use it then you need to stop using it yourself.Just like the B—ch word…women feel impowered calling themselves that as llong as the right word stands before it..calling themselves bad \b——- yeah but when Rosco calls you a broke B its a prolem lmao..so let me get this right its ok to call yourself a degrading name as long as no one else can??What happened to respecting yourself? No wonder why other races dont see anything wrong with using it.I wish I was white becuz id be callin everyone a n—er all day just to prove a point..it is a WORD.

  • down_to_earth_chick

Not to play devil’s advocate, but he was not suing to defend his right to use the N word, he was suing because he was fired (in his opinion) unfairly. I find it offensive that he used the word, but he shouldn’t have been fired for that, especially considering that he did not even use it on the air, that seems a little extreme to me.

  • Earth

I agree the double standard needs to stop. If we don’t want to be called the N-word by other ethnics then we should not use it ourselves.

  • E.C. from D,C,

*In a 2007 team meeting about an upcoming report on the NAACP’s ceremonial “burial” of the n-word, Burlington asked, “Does this mean we can finally say the word ‘n—er’?”*

Okay, so how in his mind did a burial of the word even warrant that question? “Now that the word is BURIED, can I use it wantonly?” Did the co-workers that used the word use it academically in a piece about the use of the word? There’s no comparison to just blurting it out.

    • Thaddious

He’s clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed-

  • MacMoon

I say use the word white people,BUT when u get fucced up don’t blame me.

  • simplescribble

@MacMoon…hilarious. White folks you get the green light here too, just don’t cry like babies when you have to stop to pick up your teeth.

  • Pretty Girl

A white person can be just as much a n- as a black person, unfortunately white people have used it so much against us, that they should never use it again. When black people use it with their people that is their business. It’s just like there are some things that we can say to and with each other that white peole can’t and that is the way it is. So white people stay in your lane and out of our business. And if we say don’t use it because it is offensive to us coming from someone other than a black person, then don’t use it, or else u will have to deal with the dramaa that it may bring against u.

  • really?

why do black people want to use it so much? if you use it to take away the power and negative connotation of the word, why get so upset when people of other races use it? It is a double standard. and because of that no one should use it at all.

  • SickSick

    WHITE PEOPLE!
And some of you dumb brotha’ think you have a prize when you marry their daughters.
