Aretha Franklin: “I Was Too Fat For Words”

- By Bossip Staff

Aretha Franklin goes into detail about her weight loss and method to how she rid herself of those tig ole bitties:

First things first: Lose any food that’s smothered in hot sauce. “That’s off the menu now … and no pig feet, either,” Aretha Franklin said good-naturedly on The Wendy Williams Show Wednesday. Instead, the Queen of Soul and the talk show host sipped afternoon tea in Detroit during their chat, in which Franklin, 68, revealed that she’s lost about 85 lbs.

“I’ve been looking at a lot of pictures, and I was saying [to myself], ‘You were entirely too fat for words,’ ” the 18-time Grammy winner said with a laugh.

“I was doing everything you could to lose that weight, and it’s hard,” she said. “It’s just really hard. [But] you can’t continue eating things that will hurt you eventually.” As for her much buzzed-about health following surgery for a mystery ailment back in December, Franklin did not specify the nature of the problem, but talked instead about how she’s feeling now.

“A lot of things were said,” Franklin noted of the widespread rumors about her health (most pervasive: that she was battling pancreatic cancer). “I left that behind,” she added. “And I couldn’t be feeling any better than I’m feeling right now.”

The only surgery she had was WEIGHT lost surgery and a breast reduction. Just say Aretha, damn. You don’t have cancer.

    • foxy lady

It’s her biz and she doesn’t owe anyone any explanation!! She did state that she is doing good as far as her health and that is all that matters!!!!

    • Renee

Thank you! You are so right.

@Fox Lady, it became our business when she came out and told the media about it. No one made her talk about it.

no words,im surprise they didnt have to cut off one of her legs

  • angie

She lost the weight from being hospitalized and surgery. Why are they trying to act like she changed her diet. Aretha, keep it real. U had a breast reduction and lyposuction, like all the other lazy chicks in entertainment, that have the money to upgrade themselves. I hope this makes you a better Diva now. I respect and love your music; but your personality has been Boo boo, every since you became larger than life. Pigs feet! Ugh!!

  • thatarmychick

She looks good. Changing ur eating habits is very hard… it is a battle everyday!!

  • Sharock1

Good for Aretha!!!I grew up with her music and she’ll always be special to me. Just because people spread rumours does not mean they originated from her. Are people disappointed that she might not have pancreatic cancer??? Good grief. I eat pigs feet, chittlins, okra – all of it, but I am neither “large”, “thick” or obese. The key, as Plato says is, “everything in moderation and nothing to excess”

  • angie

Right! Why u bull****ing Aretha, lol! in the words od Sugafree!

  • nymphis

aretha now that you gettin it together

All you can eat don’t mean show up wit a sleepin bag

    • Sharock1

Okay, your comment made me laugh out loud, but I really hope she has overcome the eating behavior that got her into trouble in the first place.

  • Sharock1

God bless Aretha – and her wise decision to get rid of the weight. I grew up with her music and she’s special to me. Aretha is an icon, and may she live as long as Lena Horne did. Just being rumours surfaced about pancreatic cancer does not mean they started with her. Instead of rejoicing that she might be returning to good health and not on her death bed, why some people disappointed? What’s up with that? Also, I eat pig feet, chittlins, okra, smoked ribs, ham, potato salad, mac and cheese, etc. If it’s cook right, I gonna eat it. And, I am not “large”, “thick” or obese. A person can eat whatever they like – as long as its done in moderation.

1st Santa Claus now this…nothing to believe in anymore–UGH!

I really thought that her weight loss was attributed to an illness–SMH!

It’s inconceivable to me, why anyone, African Americans, in particular, would want to elect such a SGY, when we are ALL prone to scar tissue and keloids.

Sure you’ve lost the weight but what about those icky scars/keloids that tend to take on a form, that will perhaps lead to more SGY.

What so wrong with facilitating better eating habits and going to the gym or walking before the problem manifests itself into this.

I think that’s probably more easier said than done. You gotta understand that Aretha’s been battling her weight issues for decades now. I mean she’s darn near 70 years old. I believe food was like a drug for her. I think for some, where the food addiction is so strong, the only alternative is the surgery. I don’t believe the procedure is as safe as doctors make it out to be, some have died after having it done. I just hope Aretha’s happy…finally.

The lack of respect for Ms. Franklin is disgusting.

  • Smasher

Aunt Re, you was too fat for Worlds!

  • daisy jay

At first I thought she lost all that weight from an unhealthy reason – her “mystery” illness. I’m not gonna go ahead and say this was some stunt for her because I honestly don’t think Aretha is that kind of person. I believe what she said is all true. The feeling will hit you out of nowhere and your whole life will turn around right after. Whether she had surgery or not is irrelevant. She looks better. I just hope that she becomes completely healthy soon because I do NOT want to lose her.

Aretha looks great. And the short hair looks so nice on her. Daisy loves you, Ms. Franklin.

    • DeeezNutz

I literally said “awww” out loud after I’d read your comment. That was sweet. Yeah I’m glad she’s finally got the weight off too. She’s beem struggling with it for soooo long.

  • N!gga, 4 Real?

  • Sharock1

Since when does she have to “admit” anything to anybody. Just because she’s Aretha, she owes the world an explanation? It’s none of our d*mn business HOW she lost the weight – the point is she lost it. However Aretha lost the weight, she looks a whole lot better than she did before. Why is that not enough??? I really don’t think she gives a d*mn what people think and certainly has nothing to “admit”.

  • Glendajc

I am proud of you Aretha. I don’t care how you did it, you acknowledge that being that fat was going to kill you and you did something. Surgery is painful and difficult under any circumstance.

ps. Love you even more for saying you were FAT. Girls that say they have “curves” are so in denial!!

I love the original RiRi. Would love to meet her.

  • another B.P moment....(Bi-otch please)!

It about time for Reeree to do something. She was out of control for the longest. My car is lighter than she was. As big as her ego, she was out of her mind when she insisted that a feather lite, beautiful Halle play her. Halle is not putting on no fat suit, and they looks nothing alike.

There are some very disrespectful individuals on this thread! I wonder what some of your mothers, grandmothers, or great grandmothers look like. Better yet how would you feel if some random folks on a blog were bashing you and/or yours? How fancy must one be to bash a 68 year old woman?

My friend Vanessa, a 25 yrs lady, has announced her wedding with a m’illionaire young man Ronald who is the CEO of a MNC. It’s amazing, she said she just posted her profile on a m’illionaire d’ating s’ite called ———-RichMatchmaker. ℃○M——– – and received his chat invitations a few days later. Then, everything went so well that I can’t believe it’s true! Every love story will unfold on it’s own..——-
