Question Of The Day: Spike Lee Still Wants To Know WTF Took Dubya So Long To Help New Orleans

- By Bossip Staff

Spike Lee continues to take no prisoners when it comes to former President George W. Bush!

Spike Lee received a Peabody Award on Monday for his second documentary series on the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans, this one titled “If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise.” A companion piece to his first HBO-aired look at the weather-beaten city, “When the Levees Broke Right: A Requiem in Four Acts,” this new documentary explores the fledgling rebuilding effort undertaken by the city’s citizens. Yet Lee isn’t just looking forward — he had sharp words for former President George W. Bush, who was in office when the hurricane crashed through the already crumbling levees.

“Under the direction, of the chief of command, President George Bush, W., it took the United States government five days to come to rescue of its American citizens,” Lee told The Huffington Post at the Peabody Awards ceremony. “Five days. And I know he’s written a book and whatnot, but no one’s ever explained, to this day, why it took five days. In fact, we talk about, in the first one, there was a typhoon in Sri Lanka, and we were there in 2 1/2 days, we were there, and that’s half way around the world, and yet it took five days for the United States to show up in New Orleans, and to this date, it’s never been explained why.”

The filmmaker also sounded a warning for the rest of the country: it could happen to you, too.

“Here’s the thing we have to realize. The levees are all throughout the United States of America, it’s not just New Orleans, it’s not just Louisiana,” Lee said. “And from what I’ve been told from experts, the levee system of the United States of America is in shambles, and unless they get the Army Corps of Engineers together, people are going to be at risk. If you live in any coastal area in the United States America, you’re going to be at risk.”

Keep giving Dubya hell Spike!

He has a good point — all of us who live by water are potentially fawked in the game. The weather lately has been no joke and it’s only a matter of time before another Katrina level disaster happens in the U.S.

There’s no excuse for the way our government let the people of Louisiana die in August 2005. So many more lives could have been saved and it’s disgusting that Bush was let off the hook for his share of the responsibility in that fiasco.

I’d like an answer too. And I’d like to know why no one at FEMA was criminally charged for neglect or something. What FEMA did, or rather didn’t do, was nothing short of criminal.

  • Kathryn

Yes; he as, at the time, the president of the US, should’ve responded to the matter as soon as it happened. Not to do so is just one of the many reasons he was a terrible president.

However, that was about 6 years ago, we have another president now and whatever his excuse would be for not tending to the matter and serving his people, it doesn’t matter because it won’t bring back the lives lost or rebuild the homes which were destroyed.

Vote, and maybe idiots like Bush won’t be elected into office and we won’t have things like this to complain about. But like I said, stop living in the past. It won’t do you any good.

Spike Lee’s documentaries on New Orleans have been brilliant. By far, the most comprehensive, informative, and compelling.

  • i know the truth

My question is why has Obama still not address the problems in the black community and the historical legacy of racism in this country and the unemployment epidemic which is disproportionaly effecting black men at all levels–college grad, professional, high school grad and blue collar alike? He would rather have his fake crappy butt profiling in Ireland–He’s as bad as Bush in my book!

WHAT KILLS ME, IS HOW WE WITNESSED INFANTS,ELDERLY,TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS DYING ON THE STREETS, AND NOT ONE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL DID ANYTHING. IF YOU ASK ME, THAT BY THE GOVERNMENT SITTING BACK ALLOWING ALL THOSE PEOPLE TO DIE, THAT WAS AN ACT OF TERROR, AND THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THE SO-CALLED TERRORISTS WE ARE FIGHTING EVERYDAY IN IRAQ,AFGHANFINSTAN. AND THEY WILL BE JUDGE BY GOD FOR THAT. NO EXCUSE WHY AMERICANS HAD TO WITNESS THAT TERRORISM ON AMERICAN SOIL.

    • ElGee

Valid points, Bohwe. When you look at all of the characteristics that the broken levees share w/ terrorism, it will make you think; 1) No real enemy spotted (weather is not a person) 2) The sense of unity & anxiety simultaneously (while people were STILL dying without help or answers)& 3) Going from feeling like we were going to strive for a solution to just tolerating being stuck in a question unanswered to name a few…..

  • Bohwe

AND FOR THE RECORD, YEARS AGO, NEW ORLEANS LEVYS BROKE, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE L.A. GOVERNMENT DID, GOT BLACK MEN WHO WERE DEAD OR ALIVE FROM THE PRISONS AND FORMED HUMAN LEVIES.TO STOP THE WATER. NOW, TELL ME, ALL THESE SOUTHERN RAPPERS WON’T COMMIT ON WHERE THEY COME FROM, BUT CAN GLORIFY VIOLENCE. BUT WON’T SPEAK ON THEIR HISTORY.SHAME.

I will NEVER forget 3 things about Obama

    1. He didn’t extend the unemployement even though he knows damn well it’s affecting black people more.
2.He gave the wealthy a tax break!!
3.He helped the credit card industry scam more people out of money, plus gave them extra time to rip people off in a recession. I never expected much from him, but he’ds no better than the others.

  • I Aint Mad at Ya

    @Kathryn
you say stop living in the past? You must have failed history and the lessons that come from knowing it.
Did you ever figure out that the middle east is on African continent ?

  • 2012NOW

Tornados in mid-west, tornados in the south, Mississippi River flooding midwest and south – Barry and Mooch in Ireland looking for his white Irish Catholic roots. For 2 years he pretended to be black, now for 2 years will pretend he is white. Wake up people. You been had.And you really need to get educated on factual history – not the crap that’s been spoon fed to you.

  • Sharock1

    @homie:

Yes he did. Obama first extended unemployment benefits from 24 weeks to 72 weeks and then to 99 weeks in 2008-09. Some states, however are trying now to reduce benefits.

The tax break and credit card industry issues may have a lot to do with the Republican house and senate – there is not a whole he can do, if they block initiatives. Then, they tack on a rider to anything they finally agree to.

  • Shynum1

Oh course he was let off the hook because it was part of the damn plan people wake up already. I don’t understand why people are surprised. We Americans need to help one another out and not just send money to red cross who is pocketing the funds. We are too dependent on a government that clearly shows you that they don’t care. GET IT IN YOUR HEADS THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sharock1

@Iaintmadatyou: only PART of the middle east is on the African continent – Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, Yemen, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and a few others are not.

  • Sharock1

@shynum1: you are correct. Not only does the Red Cross pocket funds but they have never been a friend to black people. During the Mississippi flood of 1927, they did not provide the same type of care to blacks, when they provided any at all. There is a really interesting book about how they behaved – Mississippi Rising – its a really good read. During WWII, the Red Cross was segregated black troops from white ones and gave inferior care to us. In the South though they have a notorious record of racism.

  • kanye west

George Bush does not care about black people.

  • Kevin

It’s the Governor’s job to call in the nat’l guard and she waited too long. The Mayor waited until the morning of the storm to tell ppl to leave with 300 buses waiting that went no where. Spike Lee made 2 amazing films in New Orleans, but his politics get in the way.

  • Ikeepit100!

This is what happens when you don’t do for SELF! You have to be stupid to think that your enemy will go out his way to help you. Take back your exsistance Blackpeople or die like punks.

  • oh snap

Yes, President Bush is one white man who did something that warranted his being brought up on criminal charges. That does not mean that the entire white race is your enemy. Come on, people.
