Yes, this really happened. Over shoes.
An Elmhurst man who tried to trade a pair of Nike Air Jordan gym shoes for a different size was robbed of them at gunpoint by two men, Elmhurst Police said Tuesday.
The man told police he put a listing on Craigslist to trade his shoes for a different size. According to a news release issued by the Elmhurst Police Department, a partially masked man arrived at his home at 8:15 p.m. Dec. 24 and stole the shoes. The Elmhurst man reported that the robber pointed a gun at him and then fled in a black Nissan Altima with Florida license plates that was driven by another man.
Within hours, the Elmhurst Police, with the assistance of the Bellwood Police Department, arrested Rodney E. Payton, 22, of Bellwood. He was charged with armed robbery with a firearm. Payton is accused of driving the getaway car, the press release said. Police said they also found a .38 caliber gun in the car.
Elmhurst Deputy Chief Jim Kveton said they were able to make the arrest because the man whose shoes were stolen provided them with the license plate number.
Police said the gunman has been tentatively identified and that further investigation into his whereabouts is continuing.
“We have some leads as to where he might be,” Kveton said.
Seriously people: we have got to do better!!!
