Robert DeNiro Says His "America Isn't Ready For A White First Lady" Comment Was A Joke

And this is coming from a guy who loves him some black women:

Robert De Niro says his crack about America not being ready for a “white first lady” was just a joke. “My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone — especially the first lady,” De Niro says in a statement to AP.

De Niro opened a Monday night New York fundraising event featuring Michelle Obama by listing the wives of Republicans running for president.

“Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney,” De Niro said. “Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?”

The crowd roared in approval, and De Niro finished: “Too soon, right?” Newt Gingrich jumped on the comment Tuesday, saying, “What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong,” Gingrich said Tuesday.

His objections prompted Mrs. O.’s campaign press secretary Olivia Alair to call the joke “inappropriate.”
