12-Year-Old Maryland Boy Charged For Beating 2-Year-Old Foster Child To Death

This is so sad:

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with the June 3 beating death of a 2-year-old foster child, Prince George’s County Police said Thursday. The victim, identified as 2-year-old Aniyah Batchelor, was a foster child who was staying with the 12-year-old boy and his family in a Fort Washington home. The 12-year-old boy will be charged as a juvenile, Prince George’s County Police spokeswoman Julie Parker said, and has been remanded to the Cheltenham Youth Facility. There was no murder weapon and police are unsure of a motive, but police say the child had been beaten repeatedly.

Police say that the child’s foster father performed CPR on the 2-year-old with the help of a 911 dispatcher, but was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital. Officials say blunt force trauma was the official cause of death. The 12-year-old suspect is a biological child of the adoptive family, while the victim was a court-ordered foster child placement. There were no adults at home when the slaying took place in the 1800 block of Taylor Avenue, but a 15-year-old daughter was taking care of the children, Parker says.

Police have no indication of any previous trouble or calls at the home or with the suspect. It’s the first time a preteen has been charged with murder in Prince George’s County since 2006. The suspect in that case was also 12. By law, teenagers in Maryland must be 14 to be charged as an adult, but the ability to waive that rule lies in the hands of the courts.

R.I.P. to little Aniyah.
