A Gallery Of Photos Of Nina Simone’s Childhood House

The childhood home of legendary jazz chanteuse Nina Simone is on the market in her hometown of Tyron, NC with an asking price of $65,000. The singing great, who was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, spent her early childhood in this modest 2 bedroom, 650 square foot home, the sixth child of a Methodist minister and her preacher husband. She began playing piano by ear at age 3, beginning a musical career that would take her from this humble home in central North Carolina to stages and recording studios all over the world.

The house itself was built in 1930, and as recently as 2010 was reported to be undergoing a restoration process which would recreate the home as it appeared during Simone’s childhood – an effort which appears to have stalled, providing an opportunity for a deep-pocketed fan to swoop in and complete the project.

There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the late star, who died in 2003 in her home in Carry-le-Rouet, Bouches-du-Rhône, France. She is set to be the subject of a controversial bio-pic starring Zoe Saldana, has been honored with a statue in downtown Tyron, and the Nina Simone Songbook Covers/Remixes project, featuring DJ’s and musicians interpreting her songs, is in the planning stages.

It’s always amazing to see that people who came from such humble beginnings went on to do great things.
