Department of Education Awards Black Colleges $228 Million In Grant Money

It’s a great day for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The U.S. Department of Education has approved and awarded 5-year grants totaling $228 million to HBCUs in 19 states, The Grio reports.

The bulk of the funds will go to HBCUs in the south, who will receive the largest amounts in grant money.  Florida A&M University, Southern University (Baton Rouge, LA), and Jackson State University (Mississippi) are among the institutions set to receive in excess of $5 million each.

This announcement comes on the heels of the 2012 HBCU Week Conference that begins on September 27, 2012 and will be hosted by the White House Initiatve on Historically Black Colleges And Universities.

Congrats to these deserving universities.
