Petition Launched To Remove Tyler Perry Programs From OWN Network

Yet another protest against all things Tyler Perry is underway and this time it’s over at Change.org. The latest anti-T.P. movement comes in the form of a petition that was recently launched to have all of his programs removed from Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network.

After giving some brief background on the purpose of the OWN network and praising Oprah’s progress thus far, the Los Angeles woman who started the petition then goes on the sum up why she feels Tyler Perry’s programs do not reflect what the network was originally created to represent.

Check out an excerpt from the petition below:

For decades Oprah Winfrey has used her television show to educate, empower, and uplift people of all races to be better versions of themselves. OWN has committed to be an extension of this work.

Where it is clear that neither Oprah or Tyler Perry are experts on race and racism, they have also refused to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community.

Stop supporting racist stereotypes on OWN and remove Tyler Perry programming!

The organizer of the petition also goes on to claim that Tyler Perry is hurtful to the black community and has no place on the OWN network before encouraging supporters to “help uplift women of all races” by signing the petition to remove his programs from the network.

Do you think this petition is going too far? Let’s discuss.
