According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, nearly 203,500 women and 1,400 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Of those 204,900, 40,000 will die from the disease making breast cancer America’s second-leading cancer killer of women. Terrifying stats, but reality in America, making national breast cancer awareness more important than ever before.

Robin Roberts

The beloved “Good Morning America” anchor was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 46 and remained positive through eight chemotherapy treatments, radiation and a bone marrow transplant for the rare myelodysplastic syndrome.

Richard Roundtree

Famous for playing super-cool action hero “Shaft” in the ’70s, the iconic “tough guy” admitted to hiding his breast cancer diagnosis for years because of pride issues. His biggest message when raising breast cancer awareness: Men get it too.

Diahann Carroll

The stunning actress was the first Black woman to star in her own television series (“Julia”) before being diagnosed with breast cancer at 63 with no family history of the disease.

Wanda Sykes

The hilarious comedienne revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy.

Pam Grier

The ageless actress famous for her iconic “Foxy Brown” role was diagnosed in 1988 and (reportedly) beat it with the use of alternative treatments.

Ruby Dee

The legendary actress was diagnosed in 1970 and devoted her life to raising awareness/inspiring Black women who are at greater risk for the disease.

    Minnie Riperton

    Known for her once-in-a-lifetime voice, she was diagnosed in 1976 and honored by President Carter with a “Courage Award” for raising cancer awareness at a time when very few did.

    Toni Braxton

    Rumors of the six-time Grammy winner having cancer swirled (and were even confirmed by multiple sources) until she finally shut them down.

    “There has been a rumor circulating that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. After feeling something uncomfortable in my left breast, I went in for a screening. I was very fortunate that they did not find anything and I am in great health. However, I encourage women to take their annual tests and suggested precautions to prevent this disease that continues to affect so many women.”
