2 Deaths And 23 Injuries Reported At SXSW After Drunk Driver Crashes Into Bar
Two people were killed at the South by Southwest festival in Texas early Thursday after a suspected drunk driver trying to outrun cops plowed into a crowd of people on a street, authorities said.
At least 23 others were injured, five critically, after the vehicle smashed through some barricades and into a group standing outside the Mohawk bar on Red River St. in Austin at 12:30 a.m.
The two people who died were on a moped the driver rammed, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said early Thursday.
After crashing into a cab, the driver leapt from the car and tried to run, but cops on the scene took him down with a stun gun.
The driver wasn’t immediately identified.
Security quickly cordoned off the area. The injured were loaded into ambulances and taken to area hospitals, Acevedo said.
Details on how the crash happened were still scant, but initial reports speculated the motorist was drunk.
Acevedo said that the accident occurred after an officer working a drunk-driving checkpoint tried to stop the silver Toyota sedan’s driver.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the deceased and injured.
