Houston Man Arrested For Running Over Triple Amputee Security Guard
A 47-year-old triple amputee is lucky to be alive after he says a driver tried to run him over. It happened at the Independence Hall apartments in North Houston.
Via KHOU reports:
Joseph Montemayor, who lives at the complex for handicapped, disabled and elderly, works part time security on the property.
Montemayor took action when he recognized a young man who’s not welcome at the complex. He took a photo of the man’s license plate, and that’s when things escalated.
“He saw the flash of the camera and came right at me,” said Montemayor. “You could hear him gun it enough to jump the curb.”
Montemayor says the driver, 20-year-old Jacaree Keith, drove toward him at full speed.
“Every intention was to run me over, that’s for sure,” he explained.
The part time security guard wheeled himself out of the way in time. Police allege Keith proceeded to threatened Keith’s life.
According to documents, Keith received a trespass warning at the complex back in December. He had been arrested for allegedly choking his girlfriend there the previous month.
Keith is now in jail on $30,000 bond, charged with aggravated assault.
“He’s picked on the other tenants over here, threatening them, that he was going to choke them to death,” said Montemayor.
Residents believe criminals prey on them because they’re easy targets.
“This Latino guy tried to push his way into my apartment, and I pulled my shotgun on him,” said resident Richard Franco.
Richard Franco says residents are most vulnerable when they get their disability checks at the beginning of the month.
He says a female resident was robbed just outside the front gate not too long ago.
“These are people that are low and need to get a job,” said Franco.
Independence Hall residents say they can’t thank Montemayor enough for risking his own life to make the complex a safer place.
“He’s a real good guy. He works hard,” said resident Jean Holstien. “For his disability, he can do just about anything he wants to do.”
Montemayor, who lost both legs and an arm in a train accident when he was 7-years-old, is active in wheelchair sports.
He says he is not intimidated by the criminals picking on his fellow residents.
“Never underestimate anyone, period,” said Montemayor.
