Toddler Found Locked Out Of House While Parents Got High Inside

A Polk County couple faces several charges after a 3-year-old was found locked outside their home while they got high, deputies said. Rhonda Branch, 25, and boyfriend Antonio Allen, 26, are charged with child neglect, possession of marijuana, inhaling harmful chemicals, maintaining a home for drug use and possession of paraphernalia.

Deputies said neighbors called them Wednesday evening when they saw the toddler outside of the home crying for more than an hour. According to arrest affidavits, the 3-year-old was banging on the doors and windows of the home on Reynolds Road trying to get inside. Authorities said when they arrived at the home it took 15 minutes before getting a response from the couple inside.

When Allen and Branch answered the door, a cloud of smoke billowed from the home that investigators said smelled like marijuana. The couple admitted to smoking marijuana and ingesting nitrous oxide from whipped cream canisters “all morning,” and neither said they were aware that the child had been locked outside, a news release said.

Deputies said the couple told them “marijuana should be legal anyway” and that is why they smoked it all the time.
