At Valenne, your grip on economics is truly weak. Companies pay out more money upfront when they pay out severance packages and continue health coverage. Basic lesson for you- employees who still work for the company are paying into company stock and paying for the benefits. Severance packages/early retirement payouts mean that the company is most DEFINITELY loosing money in lump sums immediately. And if you check the AT&T Stock portfolio it is MORE THAN OBVIOUS that the stockholders are in no way reassured.
Please study economics, stocks and capital funding before you attempt to make comments on such subjects.

I work for AT&T, own AT&T stock but above and beyond all that I know Business and Economics.

This economy has a whole lot of people down on their luck. Some people have even taken the drastic measures of taking out their whole families lives in fear of them feeling the pressure at well.

Promises made to stockholders do not mean jack, it is ILLEGAL to make promises to stockholders that is called Insider Trading. Companies provide a proposal and guess what, a propsal doesn’t mean jack when the GLOBAL economy is collapsing. I was talking about the economy in the USA and EVERYWHERE else as a whole and not just AT&T. If you do not know that AT&T is one of the most GLOBALLY DIVERSE companys on EARTH then you are definitely not up to replying to my comments. Bottom line when companies such as AT&T, Johnson and Johnson, The Hearst Media Empire and the other WALL STREET GIANTS along with the JAPANESE ECONOMY are suffering losses for 2 economic quarters straight and stocks dip every other hour then it is time to get educated and stop relying on what you think you know about business.

@ Lacombe part of what ur hubby says is true but there are cuts in the middle management level also in certain divisions. Whole divisions are going to be affected and legally I can’t say more than that at this point.

Christmas is a BS helliday anyway. All these Christian celebrations have Pagan backgrounds. December 25th is Nimrod’s birthday, not Isa’s (Jesus). Some retail stores base their whole existence around this time of year…..especially the toy stores. Like brain dead zombies people flock to the stores to hand over their hard earned money (in some cases money they don’t have…..they call it “credit”) and then spend the next few months crying broke. All this and if you ask a bunch of grade school children what is the meaning of Christmas and I bet more than half will include santa claus in their answer (smh). Speaking of which:

PEOPLE: STOP FEEDING YOUR CHILDREN THIS SANTA CLAUS MYTH!!!! FIRST OFF, YOU SPEND ALL YEAR BUSTING YOUR ASS TO BUY GIFTS FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES AND THEN GIVE THE CREDIT TO SOME WHITE DUDE IN A RED SUIT? In this nation the 5% wealthiest (the elite) own 95% of the wealth. The gap between the rich and the poor is the largest in the world and continues to grow (i.e. no more middle class…..now it is the working poor). Do the math people. When my daughter was in kidnegarten she was pulled to the side by her teacher and told to stop telling the other children there was no such thing as santa claus. My daughter (who never got in trouble) felt bad about it and of course told me of the situation. I blasted that teacher for singling out my daughter for telling the TRUTH. If she didn’t want the truth bought up why are you sending pictures of some ficticous charachter for my daughter to color. Leave the fairy tale out of the equation. If you can’t teach the real meaning of Christmas (due to seperation of church and state) then just stick to reading, writing and mathematics. If you bring up a falsehood and pass it off as education expect to be called out on your nonsense…..even if it is by a 5 year old.

Not a joke, this recession ish and of course black folks will get hid the hardest. We can do a few things to survive, rebound and flourish:

1) use creativity–our culture has more and then some. open your own gig, partner up with a relative, tighten up your resume, hell throw a rent party and charge. We did it during the Great Depression

2) Don’t snub your nose at the broke and homeless–shoot someone a quarter, a dime. Let the gods reward you tenfold for not being so motherf—— cheap cuz you lost your job

3) go back to school. no it’s not expensive. it’s an investment. one class can be paid for at local community college with financial aid. just one class gets yo ass off the couch and mingling with working folk or at least thinking folk, not moping folk.

4) go to job fairs looking good!! might not get the job, but you might get a man/woman

5) gotta go–boss is coming!

I am a current employee of AT&T, and while it’s fuccd up about the lay-offs, non-management employees must be tested and pass certain tests. If the employees pass the tests, they’ll remain on payroll until they can be placed with a job w/in the company. Managers will have a couple of to find employment w/in the Co otherwise they’re taken off of payroll…same with non-management who fail the tests. Others will leave thru attrition. these also include contract workers-which are utilized heavily by AT&T.

I had a job offer from AT&T and thank GOD I didnt take it.

But I work for the the telephone company here in Cincinnati & we are in a Union. Which means I have a job for the next 3 years…. until our contract expires.

But I thought AT&T was in a Union 2? They dont have a contract sayin that they have a job guaranteed for x amount of years???

the non-management employees are in a contract…MW expires in Apr 09. While they can’t be laid off, they can be ‘taken off of payroll’ if they don’t test qualify. Again..those that are being laid off incl managers, those being attritioned, contractors, non-management who fail the tests etc

This is not even funny! This is sad and depressing. Most black men will end up in this position, due to lack of education and being institutionalized from being locked up so much. Then they can’t get jobs because of records with felonies…A horrendous circle and Catch 22, so they don’t ever do more than a grocery cart or sign on the street….

Let’s change how we live, how we treat each other, they way we treat ourselves….Come on, people, you know better, than this. I;m tired of us being in last place. Lets be more than we ever were. The only way that can happen, is if you start hitting the books…Be a leader and not a follower…

@lil mama…employees are given skills tests. The more tests an employee passes, the greater the chances of being placed. I was a part of this a couple of years ago, and I ended up in a position that gave me a better schedule (off by 5pm, wkends off) and making almost $300 more/wk. But out of about 15-16 tests I took, I only failed 2 tests. And those tests were for skilled trade.

Did someone mention they feel pretty secure because their company is unionized???

All due respect to you but please don’t sit comfortably with that misguided conception!!!

One more thing about unions–

Even when the position of keeping a job “X” amount of years may seem secure, it’s been KNOWN that unions have thrown that on the table to proposition something else.

If you don’t understand but ONE thing about unions, know that it is a business–just like your company is.

Bartering what they think is in your best interest is their job!!!
