Kelis talks new album, Nas airing out private dirty laundry, and making music with their song Knight

Kelis Talks New Album & Divorce From Nas

It’s been 5 years since Kelis split from ex-hubby Nas and barely 2 years since he dropped the soundtrack to their divorce in the form of his 11th studio album “Life Is Good,” but the sonsgtress-turned-chef says she’s over it all.

Kelis has been quietly making a few media rounds to promote her latest album “Food,” as well as her new cooking venture and she recently chatted with The Guardian about losing ambition for music, her son Knight being on her new album, her divorce and more.

Check out a few interview excerpts below:

On being labeled an R&B artist:
I was never an R&B artist. People coined me one but that’s because, especially if you’re in the States, if you’re black and you sing, then you’re R&B.

On hating the music industry after her first album:
After ‘Kelis Was Here’ I was done. I was like, ‘I will never put out another record again, I hate this business, I hate all these people.’

I was in this race that I didn’t even realise that I was in. I woke up and ten years had passed. That was never my plan. My desire was never to put out albums, it was to do musical theatre!

On her son Knight singing on her album:
I thought it was cute because I was pregnant when I recorded “Flesh Tone,” and now he’s here. He walks around the house saying, ‘Momma, play my song!’

The former Mrs. Nas later spoke on his decision to use her wedding dress for his last album cover forced her to speak publicly about their divorce, how she feels about their split today and more. Peep the rest on the flip…

On being over Nas but still singing about their split on ‘Food:’
I’ve been divorced for almost five years; it’s over, I’m over it.

But what I would say is that last year I was made more aware of it because my ex-husband decided to talk about stuff that I hadn’t shared with the world. He slipped my wedding dress on to his album cover so now I have to talk about it! I had no idea it was happening, I was like, ‘What the…?’

But it didn’t affect my life. I’m not living that life now. I’m super-content and at peace.

On her future in music:
I might make another album. I might make 10 more albums. I might never make another album again. It depends on how the mood suits me.

I’m not declaring retirement but I’m just saying that I don’t have any musical ambitions any more.
