I’ll just say this– we, as a people, need to get over this “getting good grades and speaking proper english and getting a college degree” is somehow an anomaly within the African American community.

Black people are some of the most intelligent people around. When white people will inhabiting caves, we had erected great cities, made significant contributions to fields such as astronomy, physics, architecture, mathematics, philosophy. Other cultures robbed US, not the other way around.

So, it pains me to here Michelle Obama speaking as if it’s an oddity that she got good grades or spoke proper english. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are ignorant people out there who do tease upward moving black people, but contrary to what society wants us to believe, there are far more black people getting A’s and speaking proper english than they want you to believe. They just want to show you otherwise and I pray to GOD that we don’t fall for it.

Acknowledge Michelle for her accomplishments, but know that you come from a people who can do even more.

Looks like we have another Ann Coulter in the making! Although Ann Coulter [I believe] is more of a manufactured personality. I don’t think (at least I hope) she really *believes* the crap she says, she does it just to sell books.

I hope that’s the case with this woman. Michelle Obama is not without faults, I can see how some people might take issues to some of the stuff she’s done/said in the past. I understand fully the message Mrs. Obama was trying to convey to those Black students. A lot of times we glorify the wrong things in our community such as speaking gramatically incorrect (accused of trying to speak white), or not striving to make A’s or being an honor student (considered not cool, or being a nerd or dork, or trying to be white). These are valuable messages that’s needed to help our children change their mentality of scholastic underachievement and strive towards higher achievement.

The analogy this woman, Tammy Bruce, made between Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Clinton is completely different and inaccurate. Mrs. Obama was encouraging black students to strive for higher achievements, being a A student, speakig gramatically correct, regardless of peer pressure to “dumb down” because these are the things to help you become successful in life. Mrs. Clinton was attempting to speak in what she thought was the sterotypical speech of Blacks, as a way of being “down” with Black folks. Mrs. Obama was encouraging Black students to reach for the stars and to do well in life. Mrs. Clinton was talking down to Blacks, being condescending, patronizing, as a means to win votes. As a woman, I know for a fact that when a woman REALLY wants a man…she will have him (assuming he wants her in return) period. I’ve messed with coworkers in the past. It was ok, even when we broke up. I’ve never had a problem. Maybe my experience is isolated though.

I just think it’s very easy to get a reputation very quickly when you are intimate with co-workers. It can damage your professionalism. Plus, for individuals who want to keep their personal affairs private, it’s very difficult to do that in the fishbowl environment of an office. Someone is going to know your business, and that person will tell another person, etc.
