In Which Majority-Minority State Are Blacks Doing The Best?

By 2044, experts say the United States will become a “majority-minority” nation — the share of Whites will dip down to 49.7 percent. Currently, four states model this theory: California, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Texas. And it’s Hawaii, according to Forbes, where Black Americans are doing the best financially. According to the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) rate, which analyzed American wellness from 2011 to 2013, the national poverty rate sits at 15.9 percent…The Aloha state has the lowest SPM rate for Blacks, out of the four majority-minority states, at 17.9 percent. This is 6.8 percentage points lower than the Black national average.

Physics Doctorates Went To Just 66 Black Women In A Span Of 39 Years

Between 1973 and 2012, the number of Black women who earned a physics doctorate during this time frame will make you cringe — only 66. According to Quartz, being a “double minority” is to blame for these paltry statistics… A recent study, according to the New York Times, says that schoolteachers’ biases are the main culprits behind gender gap in STEM… In the study, when teachers graded test papers without knowing the names of the students, girls scored higher on the math exams, but when the tests were not anonymous — and the teachers knew the genders identified with each name — boys scored higher on the exams.

Walmart To Remove Confederate Flag Merch From Its Shelves

…The retailer has announced it will be removing all merchandise bearing the confederate flag from its stores and stop selling said items, too. Reports CNN: Walmart and Sears, two of the country’s largest retailers, will remove all Confederate flag merchandise from their stores. The announcements are the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding South, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina…As of Monday afternoon, Walmart.com carried the Confederate flag as well as attire featuring the flag’s design, such as T-shirts and belt buckles.
