Joe Budden Felony Assault And Robbery Case Headed To Court
Joe Budden Steering Clear Of Strip Clubs As Felony Assault, Robbery Case Heads To Court
New Jersey Rapper’s Lawyer Tries To Get Robbery, Assault Charges Tossed
Love & Hip Hop New York alum Joe Budden has stayed out of strip clubs after he taunted police to come find him in one while on the run for allegedly beating an ex-girlfriend.
The claim was among Budden’s lawyer’s reasons why his felony robbery and assault charges should be dropped.
Nami Amiri, Budden’s lawyer, said his client hasn’t been in a jiggle joint in the past year and posed no threat to the ex-girlfriend, whom he’s accused of robbing, beating and throttling.
“Joe, at this point, is anxious to get this resolved,” Amiri said outside court. “And by resolved, I mean dismissed.”
But the judge wasn’t having it, ordering Budden’s case to head to a grand jury in December. The judge also extended an order of protection between Budden, 35 and the ex-girlfriend.
Police arrested Budden last August after his ex-gal pal complained he became enraged after seeing photos of her on Instagram with other men. He allegedly dragged her out of a Manhattan restaurant, stole her cell phone, forced her into his car and drove her to New Jersey, where he knocked her around and choked her out.
The father of one then taunted the NYPD on Twitter, telling them to come find him at a Queens strip club and bragged that he’d be out of jail in time to ogle strippers later that night.
Amiri said New Jersey authorities had dropped charges in the state, and hoped that New York City would follow suit.
“We’ve given the state well over a year to investigate this matter,” the lawyer said. “We’d hoped that they would dismiss all the charges. They still have an opportunity to do so. Though we’re no longer going to waive our right to a speedy trial.”
Budden, 35, dressed down for court in navy sweatpants and a matching t-shirt, kept his hands behind his back during the hearing. He told a reporter “Not at all,” when he was asked if he’d like to comment after court.
Also during Thursday’s hearing, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office offered Budden a week in jail and a $300 fine for a guilty plea on unrelated unlicensed driving charges. A judge postponed ruling on the driving charges until the end of the year.
“Had it been anyone else than Mr. Budden, I don’t think they’d level those (penalties)” Amiri said.
