Gabby Douglas And Simone Biles Cover Teen VOGUE
Gymnasts Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles are the current cover stars of Teen VOGUE.
Biles, the current reigning U.S. Female Olympic Athlete of the Year, and Douglas, the first African-American in Olympic history to become the Individual All-Around Gymnast Champ, both chatted with the publication on a number of topics ranging from bullying to body image.
Gabby Douglas on being bullied:
“It was very tough. Sometimes I would be in the bathroom, bawling my eyes out, wanting to quit. I felt like I was all alone. But when I came through it, I felt as if I could overcome anything.”
Gabby Douglas on fame:
“I literally never thought I would ever have so many people behind me. It’s so special. I feel like I’m one of theirs, you know?” Gabby, 20, shares. “Sometimes I’m like, why are all those people taking pictures of that wall? And then I realize I am standing in front of it.”
Simone Biles on body image:
“I was built this way for a reason, so I’m going to use it,” she said. “To go out there and prove what I can do has taught me a lot about who I am. We can push ourselves further. We always have more to give.”
Simone Biles on Italian gymnast Carlotta Ferlito’s racist comments. The athelete quipped, “Next time we should also paint our skin black, so we can win too.”
“It went viral, but it didn’t bother me one bit,” she proclaims. “I guess I just have really tough skin. I was like, whatever.”
