Most Woke Athlete Moments Ever
There was a time when we complained that athletes never spoke up about what’s going on in America. Well those times are gone. Athletes are speaking up left and right and making their voices known. They’re following the footsteps of athletes before them and using their platforms for good. In short: they’re woke. Take a look at these athletes and their wokeness and salute them.
Gabby Douglas Standing There – She didn’t put her hand on her heart for the National Anthem. Y’all mad?
Muhammad Ali’s Refusal To Go To Vietnam – Ali’s whole career belongs here but especially the time he refused to go fight in Vietnam. He lost years of his career for what he believed in, too.
The ’68 Olympics – Tommie Smith and John Carlos threw up the fist at the medal stage in 1968 in one of the most iconic sports pictures ever.

The WNBA Revolt – WNBA stars wore Black for not only Alton Sterling and Philando Castile but for the police officers killed in Dallas, too. The WNBA wanted to fine them but they held a blackout from the media until the fine was lifted.
The NBA’s “I Can’t Breathe Shirt” – LeBron James and the Miami Heat wore “I Can’t Breathe” shirts in Brooklyn soon after Eric Garner was killed by police.
The Banana Boat Boyz Take Over The ESPYs – LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul all took the stage to begin the ESPYs and ended up making a statement on police violence and how they can fix things.
Michael Jordan Finally Speaks – It took decades but Michael Jordan finally spoke up against police violence, donating a million bucks each to two organizations. Better late than never.
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf – He refused to acknowledge the American flag during the National anthem and his career was never the same.
Carlos Delgado – He refused to take part in “God Bless America” during the 7th inning stretch of games.
Missouri Football Boycott – They boycotted a game in the middle of the season over racially insensitive comments from their President and sent college football reeling.
The Grambling Boycott – Before Missouri there was Grambling, who boycotted a game due to broken promises made by the administration and horrible practice facilities.
Clippers Protest – When it was revealed their owner was a terrible racist they wore their practice gear inside out before games to protest.
Los Suns – When Arizona had xenophobic legislature pass, the Suns owner had his team wear Los Suns to celebrate hispanic heritage.
Jackie Robinson – Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier. That’s woke af.
Paul Robeson – He was a former NFL player but as you know he went on to be a major civil rights activist and renowned, legendary writer.
Jesse Owens – He won the gold medal in a time when Nazi Germany was trying to call themselves the master race and didn’t even want to compete with him. That’s woke and rebellion.
Jim Brown – He’s one of the most woke Black athletes of all time forming, among other things, the Black Economic Union to help empower Black men and women.
Craig Hodges – He showed up to the White House when the Bulls won the championship and wore a damn dashiki. He was protesting the treatment of Black Americans.
Rasher Mendenhall – There’s a such thing as being too woke. He tweeted about how 9/11 was a conspiracy and that didn’t go too well.
