Rae Sremmurd Surprises Their Hometown of Tupelo, MS with a Free Pop-Up Block Party in Ode to Ending Community Violence

25 April 2017 – In efforts to unite their hometown community of Tupelo, MS, superstar hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd hosted their first Put the Guns Down pop-up block party this past Sunday. Held in Tupelo’s Gumtree Park, this event brought out families to enjoy free food, drinks, bounce houses, face painting and a live DJ set by Uncle Jxm (Slim Jxmmi of Rae Sremmurd) and D_JaySremm. Despite the light showers earlier that morning, there was no rain on this parade, as patrons danced the afternoon away on stage with Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee while singing along to some of their popular tracks including an on-stage mannequin challenge to their hit single ‘Black Beatles.

Guests were able to enjoy complimentary food by  McCoy Boy BBQ as well as cake in honor of Swae and Jxmmi’s father, Floyd Sullivan’s, birthday. Kids lined up around the park to have their favorite animal or cartoon character painted on their face while indulging in some of the carnival inspired treats such as popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones. “After recently losing a close friend due to gun violence, Swae and I felt it was important to come back home and give back to the community.” Slim Jxmmi continues, “I’m just happy we could be a positive influence.” The evening ended with no violence and community unity, showing that when the neighborhood comes together everything will fall in a positive space.
