GM Closing Plants, Cutting Thousands Of Jobs To “Reinvent Itself”

GM made a shocking announcement today that will leave thousands of people without work. The automaker is “reinventing itself” and with that cutting 14,700 jobs in North America and closing five plants.
The Associated Press reports that factory and white-collar workers will be affected some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. The plants being closed are in Detroit, Lordstown, Ohio; and Oshawa, Ontario as well as transmission factories in Warren, Michigan, and Baltimore. They are expected to close by the end of 2019.

CEO Mary Barra has confirmed the news and adds that the cuts will make GM “lean and agile” as the company aims to “lead in autonomous and lead in electric vehicles.”

This comes after GM was harshly criticized for choosing to make the Chevy Blazer in Mexico and defended their decision to do so.

“We remain committed to working with the administration on a modernized NAFTA,” GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said, adding the decision was made years ago.

Mind you they got a tax break from the GOP and instead of using that money for jobs in America, took it elsewhere.

Are you surprised that GM is cutting 14,700 jobs? What terrible news for all the families affected.
