British Actor John Boyega Calls She’s Gotta Have It 2 Scene “Trash”
It seems like this new season of She’s Gotta Have It 2 is getting mixed reviews by Netflix users and even a prominent Hollyweird actor jumped in to shame it. English actor John Boyega just called a scene from the series “trash” where it looks like the writers tried to tackle a familiar argument; Why do Black Brits seemingly get cast so frequently for Black American roles?
In the clip from the series, characters Nola Darling and her British born boyfriend go at the argument with chalkboard scratching points. The clip has been floating around Twitter getting tons of criticism.
Star Wars star John Boyega let it be known in a tweet that he too took issue with the dialogue. Where do you think this went sideways?
Hit play to hear it.
Trash. https://t.co/5jKgiB6YCH

Previously, Samuel L. Jackson commented on Daniel Kaluuya, a British raised actor, for being cast over an American Black actor in Get Out. His point was that a Black American actor may have been able to connect more deeply with the role. This quote previously caused a transatlantic frenzy on Twitter:
“I know the young brotha that’s in the movie, he’s British. So, there are a lot of Black British actors who work in this country. So, I tend to wonder, what would that movie have been with an American brotha who really understands that in a way. Because Daniel grew up in a country where they have been interracial dating for 100 years…”
Kaluuya eventually reacted to Jackson, stating that his skin color is an issue regardless of where he was born or where he travels to work. But, when it comes to She’s Gotta Have it 2, some viewers feel like the writers are taking the dialogue straight off Twitter, only they’re making trash points.
I ain't even get to THAT scene yet in #ShesGottaHaveIt2. I just have some feelings on the obvious "I saw this on Black Twitter" writing that is so apparent and obvious. But once again, my folks on here done been spoke on that so there is no need for me to repeat it. But we C U 👀 pic.twitter.com/g5kUxQfJLD

Do YOU think this scene was something to cancel Netflix over?
Hit the flip to see how else folks are offended by it.
I wonder if they even know that a percentage of Black British people are from the Caribbean. Therefore we are direct descendents of the same 2 million enslaved Africans.

I think Spike should just say he has an issue with Black people from other countries coming to Hollywood and getting work. I would also love Spike to address the colorism in his work 🙃 A lot of this is just anti blackness cloaked in xenophobia.

That #ShesGottaHaveIt Season 2 episode about Black Brits in Hollywood??? Oh, baby. It was all the way trash. All the way fuckass.

It was about perceived classism, elitism, & TOKENISM. And they were always discussed as things more subtle & underhanded than colorism. Things that are perpetuated by a WHITE-dominate Hollywood. Not from individuals coming here to make a living.
That last part was ALWAYS clear.

I’m really sick because instead of hiring Black people from the TL and from different parts of the diaspora to actually hash out this convo in script form, they copy-pasted this shit from all our timelines and this is what we get.

Lol, according to #ShesGottaHaveIt2 Black British people have Stockholm syndrome.

So I was rooting for #ShesGottaHaveIt2 up until the erasure of black British struggle and the harsh consequences of Colonialism for African diaspora OUTSIDE of the US. Sorry Spike Lee but African Americans are always making struggle a competition. #whack

Fuck #ShesGottaHaveIt2 for reinforcing the ignorance that already pertains around Black British folks from African Americans. They have so many misconceptions of us and this disgustingly pushes that narrative further out to a huge ass platform. https://t.co/Roc0cgSUQo
