Betty DeGeneres Issues Statement After Ellen DeGeneres Details Sexual Assault

Betty DeGeneres is speaking out after her daughter, famous talk show host Ellen, revealed details about being sexually assaulted by her stepfather as a teenager. Betty says she lives with “regret” for not having the “capacity” to listen to her daughter at the time.

The 89-year-old said in a statement provided to NBC News through Ellen…

“I know now that one of the hardest things to do is speak up after being sexually abused. I love my daughter, and I wish I had the capacity to listen to her when she told me what happened…

I live with that regret, and I wouldn’t want that for any other parent. If someone in your life has the courage to speak out, please believe them.”

Ellen went into full details about what happened with her stepfather on season 2 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. Ellen revealed her stepfather used her mom’s breast cancer diagnosis as an excuse to sexually assault her.

“He told me, when she was out of town, that he’d felt a lump in her breast and needed to feel my breasts because he didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to feel mine,” Ellen explained, adding that she is angry at herself for not being able to stand up to him.

We are keeping the DeGeneres ladies in our prayers.
