In White Folks News: Dixie Carter Dead at 70
Dixie Carter, who appeared on “Diff’rent Strokes” and is best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on “Designing Women,” the show where Mesach Taylor ran with a bunch of southern belles, died from cancer at 70. Pop the hood for more.
The star died from endometrial cancer in Houston, her publicist confirmed. After appearing on soap operas, Dixie landed recurring parts on TV shows Filthy Rich and Diff’rent Strokes before becoming a breakout star on Designing Women with Delta Burke.
In 2007 Dixie guested on Desperate Housewives, which garnered her an Emmy nom. Dixie had a second career on Broadway, appearing in Master Class and a revival of Thoroughly Modern Millie which won a Tony. Dixie’s husband, acting great, Hal Holbrook issued a statement, “This has been a terrible blow to our family. We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.”
