Guess who is the upcoming JET Beauty of the Week??? Yup. It’s Bugsy AKA Curtis Jackson AKA 50 Cent. The rapper talks extensively about his new book “Playground,” his reading habits, being a former bully and his relationship with his son. The story isn’t out yet but we got our hands on an early copy.

Keep reading for the quotes.

50 Cent on being a bully and his new book, 50 Cent: Playground, The Mostly True Story of a Reformed Bully:

“I was [a bully] at different points during my childhood,” the 36-year-old shares. “I was dealing with my emotions the wrong way. From a child’s perspective, you don’t understand. As an adult, you get that’s not the way to deal with things.”

The story follows Butterball, a youngster who hits a kid on the playground… with a sock full of batteries. Butterball comes from a broken household and is dealing with relocating and feelings of powerlessness. “It’s for everyone,” he adds.

Some folks (Ja Rule, The Game, Rick Ross etc…) might say 50 Cent is still a bully. But whatevs. We’re just glad he’s trying to do the right thing.

50’s take on his son Marquise and people’s expectations when you continue…

On Marquise, other people’s expectations and 50’s relationship with him:

“My son is 15, and I have conversations with him about things like this. He isn’t being bullied, but he meets people who have expectations of him because of the aggressive energy that I have and the content of the material I create. They look at him like he’s supposed to be like that,” he shares. “But he’s not. He doesn’t even know what it feels like to need for something. When we didn’t have any money, he was too young to notice.”

Though father and son grew up in the dichotomous worlds of poverty and privilege, there is one commonality: the focus on intelligence. Jackson assigns his son books to read during the summer and sends him excerpts of material to read during the school year, then calls him to discuss it. Moreover, Marquise, his son, is afforded the opportunity to be taught by the best because Jackson lives what others teach.

We like hearing about 50 Cent the father. Props to him for teaching his son and talking to him. Some rappers just send their kids Jordans and tickets and call it a day. And a lot of fathers don’t even do that much.

More on 50’s reading habits when you continue

50 Cent on reading books to help him gain an edge:

“A lot of books that I’ve read are on business and philosophy, like The 48 Laws of Power and the Art Of Seduction. I read those books because I got interested in robbing people,” he says of these renowned works on strategy. Luckily, the books offer transferable skills, which he took to every negotiation. “I paid attention to the possibilities of the deal,” he states. “Instinctively, I wanted the most options in the deal. How would I know? You pay attention to winning.”

“It levels out because when you have an aura around you, people kind of understand that they shouldn’t play with you,” he shares. “They skip the little games they would play with others,” he adds.

“Even someone under the hardest circumstances will tell you they can free themselves through reading,” he tells JET. “So no matter what’s going on, you have other options.”

SMH @ reading books to ROB PEOPLE!!!

But on the real… this guy is smart. Hope other folks are picking up some books too.

50 cent on his mission to feed the hungry on the next page.

50 on his “Lil Positivity” Street Kings project:

“SK (Street Kings) is the biggest project I’ve been involved with so far, so it’s exciting for me. Every purchase allows someone to be fed through the U.N. World Food Programme,” he says. “I recently spoke at the United Nations and had a chance to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other people who want to make the world a better place. I was just proud to be in their company.”

Looks like Fiddy is growing up nicely. These excerpts are from the October 24/31 issue of JET so make sure to pick it up when it hits newsstands.
