We here at Bossip loooove 90’s Rap and feel the whole rap game has died down. We’ve compiled a list of reasons “Hip Hop Has Changed And Is Not As Potent As It Used To Be.”
#10:The internet. The internet is making bubble gum geeks into stars. I.E. Kreayshawn and others in her ilk. The internet lets anybody who wants to put out music… put it out at their own discretion which has lead to too much music being out there and folks having to have some kind of gimmick in order to make it. The gay rapper, the white girl rapper, the rapper that got his chain snatched on camera, that rapper that beat up somebody on camera, etc… etc. Also, people feel “why buy music?”
#9: MTV & The Radio. They don’t have the element of music infused with it’s daily programming like it once had. So, “making it” is not what it used to be. MTV Jams and MTV 2 don’t offer the same exposure as regular MTV and getting your song on the radio nowadays is far fetched. Now, MTV and Big Boy are more concerned with Reality Shows than it is with the music and artist.
#8: Too Emotional. Nowadays rappers give you too much outside of their music. The mystery is gone and every rapper wants to show you how they live, explain why they live the way they do, and try to get a reality show in the process to show you all about themselves.
#7: Music Making Watered Down. Pro Tools vs Reel-to-reel, tapes or DATs, Serato Vs Turntables, and people not making real music anymore. The Roots are far and few between.
#6: Over Sexualized. Nowadays every rapper has to take off his shirt and every female better have humongous cakes and look good. Not saying that sexuality wasn’t always a part of rap, but it had it’s lane and those who liked it indulged. 2 Live Crew, Too Short, Lil Kim, etc. Back in the day, all you needed was a dope cut and lyrics. Conscious Daughters, Queen Latifah, Mc Lyte, and even though she was banging… she never sold it… “Monie Love.”
#5: Money Making Being The Main Objective. What happened to rapping for the love and being a dope mc no matter if you sold 1 million or not? Chino XL, Common, Cannibus, Mad Skillz, etc. Those guys made music for the love of Hip Hop. Of course they wanted to make money for their skill, but not at the price of compromising themselves.
#4: Drug Usage. Back in the days, being a known crack head or coke snorter would kill your credibility. Nowadays, rappers want you to know they smoke yay, sip codeine, do “X”, and sniff white. They don’t just smoke reefer, but take it to the next level. So, rappers like DMX are revered for smoking rock instead of banished for being a clucker. Gun Play will go online and do a line of coca thinking he’s emulating Tony Montana instead of that base head on the block who will do whatever drug you put in front of him.
#3: Too many Actors With Soft Tendencies. Now, we preface this one with the likes of PM Dawn, Heavy D, and Kwame, but that was a “lane.” If you chose to appreciate it… that was your choice. Today we have rappers starting soft, but acting hard all of a sudden. Look, if you are not from the streets, don’t portray it. Also, don’t confuse you singing with being “dope” and running the game. Let the singers sing, you just rap.
“We may look light, but we heavy though!”
No, you look light…the other two “look like” thugs.
#2: Sorry To Say, But The South! We love Outkast, Ghetto Boys, Scarface, Goodie Mob, and others that told the tail of the south. Now, we have sorry sounding Boosie, Gucci Mane, Plies, Alley Boy, D4L, and an overall saturation of ignorance stemming from that part of the map. The south says “they run it,” but we think they helped “run real hip hop out of the game.”
#1: Substance. Not enough Public Enemies, Eric B. And Rakims, Ice Cubes, and Paris’. Nowadays, all rappers want to do is talk guns, drugs, booty shaking, scrip clubs, and cars. What happened to making a difference and having something with a message that must be out… despite the “endorsers” being pissed?
