Celebrating The Birthday Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today we celebrate the birthday of historic Civil Rights Movement pioneer and one of the most highly regarded leaders ever to grace the pages of American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
While many of the very things that Dr. King fought tirelessly against are still alive and well in America today, African-Americans in every right from entertainment, to politics, to sports, to every day citizens have made amazing progress that won’t soon be overlooked.
So today in honor of Dr. King, who would have been 84 years old today, let’s take a look at just a few positive African- American milestones throughout the various industries in the last 10 years that would not have been possible without the leadership, perseverance, and influence of this great man.
(2010) 100 Percent of the graduating class from the predominantly black all boys inner-city Urban Prep High School in Chicago got accepted into college.
(2005) Condoleeza Rice became the first African-American ever to be appointed to the position of Secretary of State…and under George Bush, at that!
(2012) A 16-year-old girl by the name of Gabby Douglas was recognized as a world champion after becoming the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history to win gold an become the individual all-around champion.
(2012) African-American couples surpassed the likes of Brangelina, Tom & Giselle, and other prominent non-minority couples to top the Forbes highest paid celebrity couples in America list. Say what you will, but a black couple topping the Forbes list in America is certainly a milestone for a publication previously dominated by non-minorities.
(2012) Talented black actors, actresses, sports figures and media personalities are dominating programs in prime time slots on prominent television networks.
(2008 – 2016) Our President is BLACK!!! You knew that would be number one.
