This weekend, fathers across Metro Atlanta will unwrap hand-painted mugs, ugly ties, and #1 Dad t-shirts. For all they do, one day of thanks doesn’t seem like enough. When a crisis hits, dads step up to do anything for their kids. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta found creativity surges for dads.

Dr. Jim Fortenberry put together a “super dads” list. “Nothing is off limits for these guys, and their actions become hospital lore that we talk about for years.”

He says the dads and granddads on the list “provided their kids with a kind of medicine you won’t find in any pharmacy.”

Ten-month-old Russell Jr. (“R.J.”) is battling liver cancer. To get to the hospital for R.J.’s chemotherapy infusions, father and son take a train, a bus and a shuttle. Along the way, R.J. naps and takes in views of the Atlanta skyline from the comfort of his dad’s chest.
