TILA Studios’ Inaugural Empower Her Brunch Gets A Strong Welcome By U.S. Congress

TILA Studios’ inaugural EmpowerHer Brunch at the Perez Museum welcomed Black female artists and curators to the city of Miami yesterday in celebration of the More than 4 Movement – a movement to create access and equity for more Black female artists in museums and fine arts institutions across the country.
Sponsored by Mail Chimp, yesterday’s brunch featured lyricist and poet Aja Monet and keynote speaker, Naima J. Keith (Chief Curator at the California African American Museum) along with artists Nikia Phoenix, Ebony G. Patterson, and Myrtis Bedolla. Miami’s own Jill Tracey from HOT 105 and celebrity influencers Shelah Marie, Coco of Coco and Breezy, and TK were in attendance as well.

“I went to Spelman College so spaces where Black women can gather in celebration is so important and collectively we change communities,” said Naima J. Keith. As the chief curator at the California African American Museum, Naima shared her story of challenge and perseverance as an artist, echoing the concerns of many in the room.
Following the keynote address, TILA Studios received special recognition and an official welcome to the city of Miami from the Office of United States Congresswoman, Frederica S. Wilson. “Black women are vital to the success and strength of our community. Our skill, promise, and “magic” is unstoppable, if we are simply given a chance. Thank you for providing these amazing artists with a chance.”
Founded by artist and curator Tiffany LaTrice, TILA Studios claimed space for the entire week of Art Basel 2018 via the Empower HER brunch along with private dinners throughout the week. TILA Studios is also a supporter of the Ebony G. Patterson exhibit at the Perez Museum alongside Christian Louboutin and JPMorgan Chase.
As an incubator for emerging artists, TILA Studios set out to give underrepresented artists of color a chance at Art Basel. After a several month application process, 10 Georgia based artists were selected to represent the City of Atlanta as the 2018 Garden Fellows. With the support of Mail Chimp, the Garden fellows have a fully accommodated experience during Art Basel furthering their access and securing their seat at the table. For more, hit the flip!
