The Move Causes Pandemonium At Airports

Travel chaos hit passengers on both sides of the Atlantic when the Icelandic budget airline Wow Air stopped operations and canceled ALL its flights.

According to CNN, the carrier announced its closure in a statement posted to their website on Thursday. They told customers to book new flights on other airlines, and they said some people MIGHT be eligible for compensations.

The traveling woes were already on ten before Wow Air even made their announcement. According to Saurabh Aggarwal, who was supposed to fly from Toronto to Reykjavik on Wow Air, the Toronto airport was already hectic when Wow Air gave the customers conflicting info. Then, they randomly canceled the flight at 10:55 p.m.

Passengers weren’t even provided accommodation or refunds. “This really scared everyone, at that point we were finally given back our bags and no money as of now has been issued back to me,” Aggarwal told CNN.

It wasn’t until the next morning that she received an email from Wow Air telling passengers that the airline had ceased operations and all of their other flights were a no go as well.

The airline immediately faced backlash on social media over their lack of communication.

“Just found out about this news,” tweeted Jonathan Koo, who was stranded at Newark Liberty Airport after his flight was canceled. “They didn’t even notify any of us directly, had to find out from twitter and reddit.”

Luckily, airlines like EasyJet and Norwegian Air came through for the people when they offered reduced fares to stranded travelers because of the difficult circumstances, according to the Icelandic Transport Authority.

Meanwhile, Wow said that customers who bought tickets from a European travel agent as part of a packaged tour were safe. Other people with travel insurance could also be entitled to a compensation claim. Wow said that they may pay people “in accordance with European regulation on Air Passenger Rights.” If the airline declares bankruptcy, folks can make a claim with the liquidator or administrator.
