Last Friday in downtown LA, Los Angeles’ contemporary art museum The Broad hosted approximately 1300 excited for the opening party and preview to celebrate the highly anticipated, exclusive west coast debut of exhibition SOUL OF A NATION: ART IN THE AGE OF BLACK POWER, 1963-1983. SOUL OF A NATION is the internationally acclaimed exhibition that celebrates the work of more than 60 Black artists made over two decades, beginning in 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement.
Music mogul and rapper Jay Z surprised the crowd of attendees by appearing at The Broad, intently exploring the exhibit, chatting with artist Betye Saar about her contemporary art display, meeting philanthropist and museum founder Eli Broad and his wife Edythe Broad and The Broad’s founding director Joanne Heyler. Jay Z and his mother-in-law Tina Knowles Lawson also met up during his time at the museum.
