Nia Wilson’s Family Sues BART Police

Last summer was a very emotional time for many people after yet another Black teen was murdered by a racist White man with one motive — to attack a Black person. 18-year old Nia Wilson died back in July 2018 after being fatally stabbed by 28-year old “violent felon” John Lee Cowell as she and her sisters Letifah and Tashiya Wilson were exiting the station. Nearly one year after the fatal attack, Nia’s family is seeking the justice they deserve following the loss of their baby. According to reports, the family is suing California’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, citing the lack of safety precautions as part of the reason for the teen’s killing.

The San Francisco Chronicle says that not only does the family want a judge to order that security be heighted at the notorious train station, but they’re also seeking monetary compensation. The lawsuit states that the Wilson family is suing BART police for liability, negligence and a heightened risk of injury due to the dangerous condition of the property.

Nia’s murderer, John Cowell is awaiting a mental competency hearing in order to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial. BART refused to comment on the case. SMH.
