It’s been a crazy last few weeks, with headlines dominated by Elon Musk, Herschel Walker and Kanye West.

We’d imagine all three have been fertile ground for writers room jokes, but Wood Jr. says that out of respect for Noah’s relationship with West, he’s been steering clear of commenting on the problematic rapper/designer.

“I would say that Herschel Walker is the biggest threat to democracy of the three that you named,” Wood Jr. told BOSSIP. “The Kanye thing is a little bit of a no-fly zone for us. I know that Kanye and Trevor have had a few words back and forth on social media but I know Trevor last week said he ain’t in no beef with nobody, he just hopes that somebody with a condition gets the help and the medication they need. So if the host of the show is saying that and that’s the North Star, I’m always going to be in step with my dude.”

It works both ways too, Wood Jr. adds, with Sloan nodding in confirmation, as he explains how Trevor has allowed his correspondents to leave their mark on the show as well.

“I don’t think people understand just how much a show like this comes from the person sitting in the chair. Ideas and everything is an extension of his ideologies, and if there’s one thing that I can say Trevor Noah has allowed me to do in seven years, is to follow the things that interest me, not necessarily him, and all I have to do is figure out a way to make it funny.”

“We did police reform. My first two pieces out of the gate were a ride-along with the police department and the 20th anniversary of The Million Man March. Then after that, we did racism in porn, we did a rap video compiled with nothing but Trump’s most braggadocious tweets. This was back before Trump was President back when it was still cool to think Trump was a joke and not a force that could change all of society. But to go from police reform to racism in porn to do a walk along with nonprofits that go block to block in Chicago to try to defuse gun violence — that’s all us going to Trevor and him saying, ‘Yeah follow that thing and figure out a way to make it funny.’ Then he sits with us and goes, ‘Here’s an angle, there’s an angle, here’s a way.’ There’s a lot of shows where writers and contributors enhance the host but this is a show where the host enhances the writers and contributors.”

Sloan agrees, recalling a joke the writer’s room came up with about the “Black Monomyth” a play on the idea that while the Black community isn’t a monolith, there are certain things that generally we aren’t messing with.

“I was like, I understand what you’re saying but why don’t we change the name to, ‘We Don’t Do That’?” Sloan recalls. “If you ask a Black person, ‘Do you skydive? Do you bungee jump?’ You go, ‘No I’m Black, we don’t do that.’ So I was like, ‘Hey, let’s change the name.’ I went to Trevor like, ‘Bruh, let’s change the name. I understand this is a very smart name in politics, but I want it to not only be for who it’s for but also for a non-black person who has heard Black people say, ‘We don’t do that’. So not only am I talking to Black people but it’s also resonating with non-Black person who have heard it when they ask us to go skiing. ‘I love the fact that I can go to him and say, this title works, but let’s see if we can come up with something better.'”

We love that both Roy Wood Jr. and Dulce Sloan had such great things to say about Trevor Noah. We’re gonna miss him!
